L. H. Stagg, S. J., only St. Landrian Jesuit priest, was taken on the fiftieth anniversary of the distinguished and prominent son of St. Landry Parish. Father Stagg is in splendid health and enjoying a most interesting career. He is the son of the late Paul Stagg and Azema Roy, members of two of the most prominent families of St. Landry. Rev. L. H. Stagg was born in the first ward of St. Landry parish, just a few miles north of the city of Opelousas, on the 28th day of May, 1865 and was baptized in the St. Landry Catholic Church. Father Stagg who is a prominent Jesuit priest, has the honor of being the first native born St. Landrian to receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders. He was reared partly in Washington and partly in Old Grand Prairie. He received his education at St. Charles College, Grand Coteau, from which institution he was graduated in 1883. In 1889 Father Stagg left Whiteville, where he was engaged in the mercantile business, to enter the Jesuit order, going to Macon, Ga., where he made his four years noviate and preliminary studies. In 1892, he returned to St. Charles College, which institution was at that time converted into a Jesuit Seminary, where he completed his course in philosophy. He began his course in teaching in 1895, when he was assigned to a class at the New Orleans Jesuit College, on Barronne street. After teaching for several years Father Stagg went to Woodstock, Md., where he completed his course in Theology and was ordained a priest by his Eminence James Cardinal Gibbons of Baltimore on the 28th of June, 1902. In 1906 and 1907 he took a course in special studies at St. Andrews College, Poughkeepsie, N. Y., during which time he was assigned to some parochial [to faded to read] of New York at St. Francis Xavier's Church. Father Stagg is now one of the prominent missionaries in the South, being located at Selma, Ala., where he has charge of a parish. Additional Comments: NOTE: Rev. Father L. H.
