Opelousas Courier - Opelousas, Louisiana, December 11, 1852 Vol. 1, No. 1 Page 1 Will be sold, at public sale, by James Akenhead, administrator of the estate of Gilbert Sloan, deceased, or by a duly commissioned auctioneer, in and for the Parish of St. Landry, on the first day of January 1853, at the Court House at Opelousas, the Bell Cheney Springs, by virtue of a written agreement between Edmond H. Martin and the late Gilbert Sloan, and by virtue of an order of the District Court. This property is sutuated thirty-six miles North of Opelousas and the same distance South of Alexandria in the Pine Woods and beside the Mineral Springs and baths consists of one hundred and sixty acres of land. There are on the premises seven double cottages and three large houses for the accommodation of families, twelve cottages for gentlemen, a large tavern house to which is annexed a commodious Ball Room, a large Coffee House, Stable and Store house with other necessary buildings. Besides which there is belonging to the establishment good and substantial furniture worth between fifteen hundred and two thousand dollars. This property is situated mid way between the Red River and the Attakapas Parishes, and if it should not be upon the line, it cannot be further than ten miles from Opelousas Rail Road in its extension to Texas. The Springs have been liberally patronized since owned by the present proprietor and the medecinal qualities of the waters are being more appreciated every year. This property offers a joint stock company of planters a most pleasant and healthy retreat during summer, for their families and for the Hotel Keeper the most profitable investment in Louisiana. All persons desirous of purchasing, are invited to inspect the premises before the day of sale. The property will be sold on a credit of one two three and four years, in equal annual installments, with eight per cent interest at the expiration of one year on the amount unpaid at that time. Purchasers giving bond with approved security, and the property to remain specially mortgaged until final payment of principal and interest. Act of sale passed before H. L.
