The following interesting data, taken from a diary kept by Louis Chachere, Sr., the founder of the large and influential St. Landry family of that name, was kindly furnished ns (sic) by Mr. W. L. Gil: Arrived at Natchez Feb. 6, 1783; was married December 19, 1786; Louis, his son, was born Feb. 25, 1788; Emilie, his daughter, was born Feb. 20, 1790; arrived at Opelousas Jan. 1790; established himself "at Atacapas" in January, 1791; his wife arrived "at Atacapas" Feb. 4, 1791; Poupoune, his daughter, was born at "Mr. Boutte, fils," Jan. 4, 1792; Manette, his daughter, was born May 27, 1794; he took charge of the Clerk's office in Opelousas Dec. 25, 1792, and left it April 23, 1795; Lille, his son, was born May 12, 1796; Hyacinthe, his daughter was born July 12, 1798; Veilland, his son (still living in Opelousas), was born May 29, 1801; made a crop of corn in Bellevue in 1801; Beaurepaire, his son, was born Feb. 6, 1804; Constant, his son, was born March 23, 1806; Hermance, his daughter, (still living in Opelousas,) was born Feb. 9, 1810; Rodolphe, his son, was born July 31, 1815. Emilie became Mrs. Martel, mother of the late Judge B. A. Martel and Eugenie, wife of A. M. Perrault, also deceased, and of our venerable friends Balthazar and Eugene Martel and Mrs. L. D. Verret and Miss Emma Martel, all of whom are still living. She died in July, 1883. Pouponne became Mrs. Leon Boutte, mother of our fellow citizen F. M. Boutte, of Leopold Boutte, who was killed in Virginia, of Mrs. George Benguerel of Opelousas, of Mrs. William Gil of Baton Rouge, and of Mrs. Ogden Elmer, of Lafayette, all deceased. Hyacinthe married Jacques Bacon and was the mother of two sons, Alfred and Philemon, the latter of whom survives. Lille was the father of our fellow townsman Jules L. Chachere and of Rodolphe Chachere, deceased, Mrs. Lastenie Lyons, Mrs. J. M. Milsted and Mrs. Joseph Boutte, of New Iberia. Veilland, the oldest living member of the family, is the father of Mrs. W. R. Meginley (who has a large family of children and grandchildren and one great-grandchild), of Dr. Theogene, Joseph, James O. (ex-clerk of Court), and Henry Chachere. L. V. Chachere, deceased, ex-sheriff of St. Landry, was his eldest son. Beaurepaire was the father of our fellow townsmen Theodore and Alex. B. Chachere and Mrs. Dr. B. E. Clark of Acadia and Mrs. Rodolphe Chachere of Opelousas. Constant was the father of Theodose C., and Louis, of Prud'homme City, Mrs. Alex. V. Richard, of Grand Coteau, Mrs. Martin Carron, of Faquetaique, Mrs. Louis Bacon, Mrs. Jos. Lavergne, Mrs. Etienne Stagg and Mrs. Frank Brooke, of Acadia. Manette married Antoine Boutte and was the mother of Vauchere and Alcide Boutte and of Mrs. Joseph Bacon and Mrs. Eugene Martel, all living in St. St. (sic) Landry. Hermance married D. Contini Sittig, a French gentleman of education, and survives him. She is the mother of Rodolphe, Jules and Victor Sittig and of Mrs. E. Veltin - recently deceased, aged 60 years - Mrs. Leopold L. Cahanin, Mrs. James Gayle, Mrs. C. Richard, Mrs. L. B. Sandoz, and Mrs. C. Roos, of San Antonio. Mrs. Sittig, like most of her brothers and sisters has a large family of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.She is in the full enjoyment of all her faculties and is yet strong and active for one of her years.
