They came from Cadiz, Spain. His direct descendant, Don Andre Gil was a native of the Post of Baton Rouge. The family was deeply involved in politics. This is noted by the activities of his son, William Gil. He was born, lived, died and is buried in Baton Rouge. During his lifetime he was a member of Town Council in 1828, Justice of Peace in 1828 and was re-elected and served eight consecutive years. Treasurer and Collector of City in 1837 and was elected Mayor in 1838 and Notary Public until 1856.
