Sandoz & Andrew Meynier ============================================================= The Whig State Convention which lately assembled at Baton Rouge, have made the following nominations for State Officers, in view of the election which will take place on the 27th instant: For Governor: --- LOUIS BORDELON For Lieut.-Governor: --- JOHN RAY. For Secretary of State: --- D. D. AVERY. For State Treasurer: --- GEO. C. McWHORTER. For Attorney general: --- R. N. OGDEN. For Superintendant: --- T. B. THORPE. ------------------------------------------------ In view of the election of the 27th of December instant, the Democratic State Convention which lately met at Baton Rouge, made the following nominations for State Officers. For Governor: --- Col. P. O. HEBERT. For Lieutenant-Governor: --- W. W. FARMER. For Secretary of State: --- A. S. HERRON. For Attorney general: --- ISAAC E. MORSE. For State Treasurer: --- C. E. GRENAUX. For State Superintendant of Public Education: --- J. N. CARRIGAN --------------------------------------------- WHIG NOMINATIONS According to previous notice, a Convention of the Whigs of the Parish of St. Landry, was holden on Saturday the 4th inst., in the Town of Opelousas, for the purpose of nominating six candidates for the General Assembly, viz: two to represent the Senatorial District of St. Landry and Calcasieu, and four to represent this Parish in the Lower House. On motion of Dr. Thos. A. Cooke, Dr. John A. Taylor was called to the Chair and Messrs. S. D. Allis, Enoch Gardiner and A. Dejean were appointed Secretaries. The President having briefly stated the objects of the meeting, and the basis of voting being established, (the vote to be taken by Wards.) the Convention proceeded to ballot for the several Candidates, which resulted in the following selections: For the Senate: --- Achille Dupre, T. M. Anderson. For the House: --- John E. King, Johathan Harris, Hypolite Chretien, Augustin Guillory. On motion of E. H. Martin Esq. the above nominations were confirmed by the Convention without one dissenting voice. At this stage of the proceedings, the President communicated to the members, the report that had just reached Opelousas of the nominations, by the Baton Rouge Convention of Louis Bordelon, one of St. Landry's most gifted and popular sons, for the high and responsible position of Governor, and of John Ray of Ouachita, a sterling and talented Whig, for the post of Lieutenant-Governor of the State. This announcement was received with deafening applause and the nominations being submitted to the Convention were unanimously approved of. On motion, the Convention adjourned. Dr. JOHN A. TAYLOR, President S. D. Allis, Enoch Gardner, Adell Dejean - Secretaries ------------------------------------------------- According to notice, a Democratic Mass Meeting was held at Opelousas on Monday the 6th instant, to nominate candidates for the General Assembly. The meeting being called to order, upon motion of A. R. Hawkins. Dr. J. B. Lee was requested to take the chair, and Henry L. Garland to act as Secretary. On motion, the resolutions adopted by the late Democratic State Convention held at Baton Rouge, on the 1st. inst., were read by the Secretary and adopted, as embodying the sentiments and principles of the democratic party of St. Landry. The nominations made for the offices of Governor, Lieutenant-Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, Treasurer and Superintendant of Public Education were then made known to and approved by the meeting. Was then proceeded to the nomination of candidates to represent the senatorial district and the parish in the next General Assembly. A. R. Hawkins nominated for the Senatorial District, Dr. Edward M. Millard and Elisha Andrus. B. A. Martel nominated Frederick Lutz, and supported his nomination with some pertinent remarks. Mr. Lutz being present, declined the nomination. The nomination made by Mr. Hawkins was then voted upon and unanimously approved; whereupon Dr. Edward M. Millard and Elisha Andrus were declared the candidates of the Democratic party, to represent the Senatorial District composed of the Parishes of St. Landry and Calcasieu. Was then proceeded to the nomination of candidates for the House of Representatives of the General Assembly. M. Lutz being again put in nomination, expressed his thanks to the meeting for the compliment, but again declined. The following ticket was then proposed and nominated with unanimitiy. WILLIAM H. PATTEN, PLACIDE D. GUILBEAU, JOSEPH E. ANDRUS, SOLOMON B. HARMAN. On motion of P. D. Hardy, Esq., a committee of vigilence to consist of seven members was organized and the chairman requested to make the appointment of such as should constitute said committee. The chairman designated as such: A. R. Hawkins, John Cochran, Jas. G. Fitzgerald, William Offatt, Dr. A. J. Thornton, Frederick Lutz, Henry L. Garland On motion it was ordered that the Secretary furnish a copy of these proceedings to the editors of the Opelousas Courier, with the request to publish the same in French and English.
