January 05, 1895, Page 4 January 5, 1895 Mr. A. V. Lyons, deputy sheriff and ward and town constable of Rayne, was killed last Monday night by Sylvester Abshire. The killing, it is said, was a pure and unadulterated murder. Abshire has been captured by Sheriff E. W. Lyons and lodged in the Crowley jail. Since the above was put in type we learn, by a dispatch to the Times-Democrat from Rayne, that several hundred citizens of that town and vicinity met in a mass-meeting and passed strong resolutions, urging the district attorney to prosecute the murderer with vigor. Mr. E. P. Veazie, of Opelousas, has been retained by Mr.Lyon's friends to aid in the prosecution. St. Landry Clarion (Opelousas, La.) January 19, 1895, page 2 Sylvester Abshire, who killed Deputy Sheriff A. V. Lyons near Rayne on Dec. 31 last, was convicted of murder in the first degree at Crowley last Monday. The jury was out only forty-five minutes. This is a sample of how criminal cases can be pushed to completion if those interested will only co-operate. Abshire will be the first man ever hung in Acadia parish.
