Bayou Chicot, La., May 1st, 1891
To the Executive Committee of the Parish of St. Landry --
Gentlemen:  We, the undersigned citizens and voters of the Bayou Chicot precinct,
would respectfully beg leave to show cause why it is necessary and to the best
interests of the Democratic party of the parish, and the full, fair and unbiased
expression of the popular will and the free expression of the people of said
precinct in the exercise of their political franchise.  We believe it unwise and
detrimental to the interests of the party to continue to hold the elections in
private store houses, as is the case at the Chicot precinct; forasmuch as the said
store houses in which elections are held are private property, the owners of the
election, owners of the poll book and owners of the ballot box, together with
returns of election.  We, your undersigned petitioners, therefore, as the
representative Democracy of this precinct, earnestly request your honoroable [sic]
body to remove the polling place at Bayou Chicot from Mr. Haas' store, which is
private property, to the public school house of Bayou Chicot, which is public
property and situated on the public road about 300 yards from the Bayou Chicot
postoffice.  This will guarantee unto the people, elections for, of and by the
people.  Respectfully submitted.  [Signed by 55 persons.] [no names appeared with
