Lionel Ardoin (Pic), 30 Dec 1997 VILLE PLATTE - Funeral services for Mr. Lionel Ardoin, 80, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 15, 1997, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church here with burial in the church mausoleum. Mr. Ardoin, a resident of Ville Platte, died at 5 a.m. Saturday, December 13, 1997, after a long illness. He was born on August 26 to parents Willie and Lenuis Ardoin. He grew up in the Grand Prairie area of St. Landry Parish. After high school he ventured on to L.S.U. where he received a degree in Agriculture. Mr. Ardoin continued his education with a Masters degree as well as 30 hours beyond his Masters. In 1941 he began his first teaching position at Ville Platte High School. Four months later, he was called to serve in World War II and then again in the Korean Conflict. He resumed his position at Ville Platte High School for many distinguished years. During his tenure as a teacher of Vocational Agriculture and FFA Advisor at VPH, students under his direction excelled in many categories at the area state and regional level with two of his students achieving the coveted American Farmers Degree. Mr. Ardoin further distinguished himself serving as president of the Louisiana Agriculture Teachers Association. In 1971 the principal-ship at VPHS was offered to Mr. Ardoin and during five years served students and faculty with pride and loyalty. As an administrator, he is remembered as a leader with a strong focus on discipline and achievement and above all fairness to all. After 36 years of service in the education field, Mr. Ardoin retired in 1976. Shortly after retirement, offers came from many private schools enlisting his talents. Again, he contributed another principal-ship at Amy Bradford Ware in Opelousas for three years. His final position in education he ventured into a new environment as a middle school level teacher at Sacred Heart High School in Ville Platte adding to a richly woven tapestry as an educator. Since his official retirement, Mr. Ardoin adored the company of his loving wife of 56 years. Ollie Sylvester Ardoin and their three children, Shirline A. Taylor, Dr. Lionel Ted Ardoin and Patricia L. Claiborne. He loved to read, maintain his yard and share stories of wisdom from his experiences with his nine grandchildren. He is known by many to have been a kind, gentle, intelligent and peaceful man of God who could find humor in life and greet it with a contagious smile. He has truly celebrated 80 years of life surrounded by people who loved him. May he rest in God's eternal love. Mr. Ardoin, a resident of Eunice, died at 9:58 a.m. Wednesday, December 17, 1997, in Eunice Regional Medical Center. He was an attorney for the City of Eunice for 16 years. Mr. Ardoin was a member of the Lions Club, Jaycees, Eunice Men's Tennis League, Louisiana Bar Association and Louisiana Trial Lawyer's Association and Past President of the St. Landry Bar Association. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a state boxing champion. Mr. Bowie was a parishioner of St. Peters Catholic Church and a member of various organizations such as Bonne Mort Society, Holy Name Society, AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) and CC Camps 1937 to 1938. Mr. Coreil also worked with the church's confirmation class and did volunteer work with the Missionaries of Charity Sisters, founded in Baton Rouge by Mother Teresa, in their mission to the poor. In recognition of his outstanding abilities and community service, he was selected as a member of the Leadership Class of 1990 of the Greater Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Coreil devoted much of his professional career in marketing, public relations, community relations and regional news media. He served as a past public relations coordinator for the Greater Baton Rouge Airport District and served as a reporter and producer with WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge, KPLC-TV in Lake Charles and KLFY-TV in Lafayette. As a reservist with the Louisiana Army National Guard, Mr. Coreil served as an aide to the commanding general and worked in public affairs with the 256th Infantry (Mechanized) Brigade. He received the Army Achievement Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Overseas Reserve Duty Ribbon and the Army service Ribbon. A graduate of Sacred Heart High School of Ville Platte, Mr. Coreil attended Louisiana State University in Eunice, McNeese State University in Lake Charles, the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette and the U.S. Army Administration School in Fort Jackson, S.C. While a student, Coreil served as a legislative aide in the Louisiana House of Representatives, Louisiana State Senate and with the Louisiana Secretary of State. During his high school years, he also served as an announcer with KVPI Radio in Ville Platte and KEUN Radio in Eunice and was state reporter for the Louisiana Future Business Leaders of America. Mr. Guillory was a member of the St. Landry Chapter of the American Red Cross, serving on its board of directors until 1988. He served on active duty with the U.S. Air Force from 1964-1968, a reserve officer from 1968-1970 and received and honorable discharge on Nov. 11, 1970. Keller, 85, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Our Lady of Sacred Heart Church with burial in the church mausoleum. Dr. Keller died at 12:25 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, in his Church Point residence. A native of Eunice, Dr. Keller received his pre-medical education from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, Tulane University and Louisiana State University School of Medicine. His internship and residence were done at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. In 1938, he began his practice in Church Point. His practice was interrupted in 1942 when he served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He first served with the U.S. Marines in the South Pacific and later attended the Naval School of Aviation Medicine where he earned his gold wings as a navy flight surgeon. He carried the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Following his tour of duty, he returned to Church Point and resumed his medical practice until his retirement 50 years later. Dr. Keller was a member of the Acadia Parish medical society, the Louisiana State Medical Society, The Southern Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was made a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians in 1973 and received a lifetime membership in the organization in 1982. In addition, he was active in Church Point civic affairs. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Woodmen of the World, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served as a member of Bishop Schexnader's Advisory Board and in 1970 was appointed as a member of the Knights of St. Gregory by Pope Paul VI. He played an instrumental role in the founding of the Acadia-St. Landry Hospital in Church Point where he served as chief of staff on two occasions. He was also a staff member of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette and Doctors' Hospital in Opelousas. Dr. was also involved in the organization of the Lion's Club, Cub Scouts and Midget football team. Survivors include his wife, Ethel Dufresne Keller of Church Point; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles Randolph Keller and Judy Forshag Keller of Lafayette; one daughter, Karen Elizabeth Keller of Lafayette; one brother, Jack Keller of San Bernardino, Calif.; two sisters, Marie Pettifer of Lake Charles and Ester Russell of New Orleans; four grandchildren, Charles Clinton Adcock, Eric Keller Adcock, Charles Randolph Keller Jr. and Caroline McKenzie Keller; three step-grandchildren, Thomas F. Sr. Margaret Lafleur, 15 Dec 1997 At 2:30 a.m. Friday, December 12, 1997, Sister Margaret Lafleur, MSC (formerly Sr. Alcuin) died at Doctors' Hospital in Opelousas. Born on June 13, 1927, in Ville Platte to Nathan J. Lafleur and Marie Effie Buller, Sr. Margaret entered the Marianites of Holy Cross on August 29, 1943, and pronounced her final vows on August 13, 1948. From 1945 until 1955, Sister taught elementary school in Eunice, Morgan City and at St. Agnes, St. Cecilia and St. Christopher in New Orleans. Completing her studies as a nurse in 1958, Sr. Margaret joined the staff of the then new Opelousas General Hospital as Surgery and Dietary Supervisor, a position she held until 1964. In 1964-65 she served as administrator of Opelousas General. When the Marianites opened Prompt Succor Nursing Home, Opelousas, in 1965, Sr. Margaret was named its first administrator. For almost 30 years, she guided the development of the nursing home and worked for its approval by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals and Nursing Homes; the home receive accreditation in 1966. During her tenure, Sr. Margaret served as president of the Louisiana Registered Nurses Association, the first Catholic sister to be elected president of the state association. Sr. Margaret was a Fellow in the American College of Nursing Home Administrators and receive from Bishop Frey of Lafayette the Bishop's Medal for outstanding service to the Church and the diocese. Her vision for care of the elderly came to its greatest fruition with the construction of Cest la Vie, an independent living apartment complex which opened in 1986 which remains a ministry of the Marianites of Holy Cross. After leaving Prompt Succor in 1994, Sr. Margaret ministered through Universal Home Health in Opelousas. She lived in Carencro until her own health failed in 1997 and she entered J. Michael Morrow Memorial Nursing Home in Arnaudville. Sister Margaret will be waked at St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas from 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday, December 14, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. On Monday, December 15, visitation resumes in the church at 8 a.m. with the rosary recited at 9 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Sister will be buried in the St. Landry Cemetery, adjacent to the church. Rosemary Ludeau, 18 Dec 1997 VILLE PLATTE - Funeral services for Mrs. Rosemary Ludeau, 68, will be held at 4 p.m. today in Our Lady Queen of All Saints Catholic Church here with burial in Gates of Heaven Cemetery. Mrs. Ludeau, a resident of Ville Platte, died at 4 a.m. Wednesday, December 17, 1997, at her residence. She was a writer. She established Girl Scouting under the Bayou Council in Ville Platte and was a troop leader, troop organizer, area coordinator and neighborhood chairman for 15 years. Mrs. Ludeau also served on the Regional Bayou Council Board of Directors for three years. In 1975 she received Louisiana Farm Bureau's Freedom Award for promoting Patriotism and Christian America based on constitutional government. For her scouting work, she received the "Thanks Badge," the highest award for adults in scouting, and in 1976 received the Bicentennial's "Hidden Heroine Award." She promoted and organized July 4th picnics for four years. She taught square dancing to teen-agers for six years. Mrs. Ludeau was the chairman of the town's Bicentennial Picnic and Pageant in 1976. Mrs. Ludeau was chosen Ville Platte's Woman of the Year in 1962 and was nominated again in 1971, 1975 and 1976. She was an Honorary Colonel on the staff of Governor Edwin Edwards. She was included in the 1980 Edition of "Who's Who Among American Women." Mrs. Ludeau had a career in the newspaper business for 27 years and was Women's Editor of the Ville Platte Gazette in 1976 and 1977 and from 1977 through 1980. She was the recipient of over 80 state and national journalism awards for columns, feature stories, editorials, news, page makeup and general excellence. In 1985 she co-founded The American Heartbeat and served as editor and co-publisher. She later helped found Bonnes Nouvelles and served as editor until 1995. In 1990 she was selected as Louisiana Cotton Festival's "Colonel Cotton" and in 1995 she received Louisiana Press Women's Communication of Achievement, "The Maggie." He was known locally as a longtime teacher, coach and principal of Opelousas High School. Mr. Mahfouz began his teaching career in 1939 and served as principal of Opelousas High School from 1952 until 1971. Since 1977, he served as public relations officer for First National Bank of Opelousas. Mr. Mahfouz was a member of the Louisiana High School Athletic Assocation, the National Organization of Secondary School Principals, the Opelousas High School Booster Club and many other organizations. A captain in the U.S. Army, he was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict.
