She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and several other local clubs and organizations. Mr. Cropper, a resident of Opelousas, was born March 8, 1927, and died at 8:20 a.m. Saturday, February 7, 1998, in Veterans Administration Medical Center in Alexandria. He was a former Marine, owner/operator of a family grocery/filling station, a barber and a retired employee of Brown and Root. The Rev. Angelo Cremaldi will conduct the services. Mr. DeJean, a resident of Opelousas, died at 5:05 a.m. Thursday, February 19, 1998, in Opelousas General Hospital. He was a retired manager at Olinde's Furniture Store with over 25 years of service. Mr. DeJean was a member of the Woodman of the World and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1173 in Opelousas. He was very active and participated in the Adoration Chapels in Our Lady of Mercy and Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Churches. For five years, she was the executive director of Festival International Louisiane. Under her direction, the festival became one of Louisiana's premiere events, garnering national and international praise. She also served as a consultant and advisor to New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Louisiana Folklife Festival, the Cultural Olympiad of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, the Southern Arts Foundation and the U.S. Information Agency. Tireless in her efforts to make the cultural arts accessible to all communities, Ms. Verret worked with numerous grassroots organizations in Lafayette, Iberia, St. Martin and St. Landry parishes to organize and present folklife programs.
