She was a member of the National Federation of the Blind, Holy Ghost Senior Sodality, Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary Chapter Sacred Heart Court #60, CCD Instructor, UNCF, Mother Katherine Drexel Rosary Guild, Girl Scout Leader, 4-H Club Leader and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Mrs. Meyers served 44 years as an educator with the St. Landry Parish School System. Survivors include: two sisters, Myrtle B. James of New Orleans and Gertrude Fortune' of Seattle, Wash. She also leaves to mourn two nieces, Rose Marie Armour of New Orleans and Edna Sarah Benjamin of Seattle, Wash., along with a devoted niece, Sharon D. Williams of Opelousas, all of whom she reared; two sisters-in-law, Josephine Stewart of Alexandria and Doreathea Viltz of New Iberia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr. Ortego, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Ortego and a life-time resident of Grand Prairie, died at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, February 2, 1999, in Ville Platte Medical Center following a long illness. Mr. Ortego, a retired farmer and World War II veteran, was active in many civic and professional organizations including St. Landry Parish Farm Bureau Board of Directors, St. Landry Parish Cattleman's Association, Charter Member and Member of Board of Directors of the Grand Prairie Water System, and a member of the American Legion Post 209 for 50 consecutive years. He also served as Justice of the Peace for St. Landry Parish as well as the Grand Marshal of the 1971 Yambilee Festival. Survivors include his wife, Doris Soileau Ortego; two sons, Jack D. Ortego PhD of Grand Prairie and Denis L. She was the daughter of the late Roland R. Sibille Sr., a native of Sunset, and the former Martha Lavergne, a native of Bellevue. She was a 1946 graduate of S.L.I. (now U.S.L.) and began a teaching career from which she retired as an Associate Professor of Mathematics. Mrs. Guidry was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Community. Rev. Dornier, a native of Convent, died Thursday, February 11, 1999, in Ignatius Resident in New Orleans, of atherosclerosis following a paralyzing stroke thirty-four years ago. He was educated at Sacred Heart Academy, Jeferson College in Convent, Romeville High School and Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. Rev. Dorian graduated from St. Louis University, St. Louis, Mo. He entered the Jesuit Order on August 26, 1931. Rev. Dorian taught at the Jesuit High School, New Orleans, 1938-41 and again 1948-51. He studied theology at St. Mary's in Kansas from 1941-45 and was ordained there on June 21, 1944. Rev. Dorian ministered as chaplain at Schumpert Hospital, Shreveport; Sacred Heart Parish, Grand Coteau, and Manresa Retreat House, Convent. Since 1982 he has been a resident of Ignatius Residence, where he retired with a stroke. Mr. Perkins was born February 12, 1915 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Lewis Arthur and Ethel Valentine Perkins and raised on the family farm, Tamarack, on the bluffs of the Ohio River. He graduated from Taylor High School and attended Ohio State University. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1939. Mr. Perkins moved to Harlingen, Texas and became active in the Texas Amateur Softball Association, managing the Southwest Regional Amateur Champion team in 1947 and became president of the association in 1948. In 1955, he became general manager for the Harlingen professional baseball minor league baseball teams in Abilene, Texas; Albuquerque, N.M.; Asheville, N.C.; Newport News, Va.; and Greenville, S.C. Mr. Perkins was assistant farm director for the Cincinnati Reds in 1960-62 and was hired by the Houston Astros to operate their minor league team and direct their spring training camp in Cocoa, Fla. in 1965. He became traveling secretary for the Houston Astros in 1967 and worked for the Astros until his retirement from baseball in 1980. Survivors include: his wife of 45 years, Patricia Bienvenu Perkins; a daughter, Mary Julia; a son, Arthur Val; a sister, Mary Underwood of Arlington, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Judge Bob Perkins of Austin, Texas. Mr. Harmon was a member of the St. Landry Farm Bureau for the past 20 years; served on the St. Landry Cooperative Extensive Service Committee for many years; a member of the Woodmen of the World and served as State President of that organization; past President of the local American Cancer Society; served as a State Board Member of the Louisiana Cancer Society; and a member of the Board of Directors for St. Landry Bank of Opelousas. He was given the "Citizen of the Year" award in 1967 by the Opelousas Chamber of Commerce; was presented the "Service to Mankind" award in 1967 by the Opelousas Sertoma organization; was a trustee for the church parish Our Lady Queen of Angels since it was organized; a member of the Usher Society of Our Lady Queen of Angels and served as an officer in that organization; was designated a Knight of St. Gregory by the Pope in 1970 and was designated as "Faithful Navigator" in the Knight of Columbus Fourth Degree. Mr. Harmon was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army where he received the Bronze Star.
