Fontenot-Jones, Ph.D., departed this life on October 29, 1999, at 10:55 a.m. in Lafayette General Hospital. According to (Proverb, 29:18), "Where there is no vision the people perish". Wonda was truly a visionary, Cultural Anthropologist and Ethnic Studies scholar as projected by her life and accomplishments. Wonda's early Christian training began at True Vine Baptist Church where she was baptized. Her public school education culminated at Paul Lawrence Dunbar where she is a 1966 graduate. She is a product of rural America where her parents were homesteaders in rural Southwest Louisiana (Grand Prairie). In this environment she learned the importance of tradition, community, and education. These basic values influenced her desire to explore other cultures in search of aesthetic expression, thus, prompting her to earn a Bachelors, a Masters Degree in Sociology, and Doctorate of Philosophy which were achieved in Cultural Anthropology and Ethnic Studies from the University of California at Berkeley. Her early field research years were spent participating and observing cultural traditions, the African Diaspora, and especially rural African American and Native American traditions. Self-definition was a priority for Dr. Fontenot-Jones and to her it meant having the responsibility to highlight the traditions and contributions of persons of African descent (African Americans and Black French Creoles) in Louisiana and rural areas. In addition, her interests developed into researching and documenting the richness, varied traditions and practices of cultural sub-groups in rural areas. Dr. Fontenot-Jones had an ambitious agenda which advocated cultural sensitivity, respect, understanding, and appreciation of cultural differences. Her additional accomplishments include: the Wonnamuse Institute and the Malaki Festival. Her public performances include, (African dance form; poetry and theater arts, she was a conference speaker, a world traveler, she held various local, State, and National board memberships, she appeared on several national radio and television talk shows and was the recipient of many awards. Among these was the Eastern Star, "Lovey G. Henry Rainbow", Rural Community Outreach. The legacy of Wonda Lee Fontenot-Jones is remembered by her husband, Wilken Jones Jr.; her father, Hayward Fontenot Sr., his wife Pearline; and her two sisters Mable Fontenot Owens, Altedena, Calif., Linda Fontenot Simmons of Baton Rouge; and four brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law. She is also remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles; and a host of relatives and friends. Mr. Alsandor, a resident of Opelousas and a native of Leonville, died Saturday, November 6, 1999, in Doctors' Hospital of Opelousas. He was a member of the Knights of Peter Claver, NAACP, Crusade for Justice and a member of St. Anne's Parish. Aristile Carmon, a native of Grand Prairie, was born on October 4, 1909, died peacefully on November 6, 1999. Mr. Carmon had been an active member of the civil and human rights movement for over fifty (50) years. He was very active in St. Anne Church in Frilot Cove and was a charter member of the Knights of St. Peter Claver, Father John Heelan Council #112. Mr. Carmon held the office of treasurer in the Knights from the inception of the council to his death. He had a strong devotion to Our Lady of Fatima and was devout in saying the rosary daily. The professional life of Mr. Carmon was that of a farmer and carpenter. To list all of the accomplishments of Mr. Carmon's life would be endless. Among the attainments he was most proud of were helping to organize, in St. Landry Parish, the blacks voters registration, busing for black children, desegregation of schools, NAACP, and the redistricting of the school board and Police Jury in order to bring about black representation. Mr. Carmon had an avid interest in his family's history. He wrote a history of the family and constantly updated his family tree. Survivors include: his wife, Edna Robert Carmon of Frilot Cove; four sons, Bishop Dominic Carmon of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, Clifford Carmon of Beaumont, Texas, Clifton Carmon of Opelousas and Aubrey C. Carmon of Denver, Colo.; three daughters, Theresia Davis and Virginia Fontenot, both of Frilot Cove, and Vercie Carmon Johnson of San Diego, Calif.; 20 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
