In her teenage years, she was employed by Dr. Harvey Poret as a dentist assistant. She married Marvin Ortego on December 1, 1951, and assisted him in managing a Dairy Business, gas station and a Gulf "Chevron" Bulk Plant. After raising five children, she returned to LSUE and obtained her nursing degree. She then was appointed Director of Nursing at Opelousas Health Care. After the death of her husband in 1996, she assumed the role of owner/operator of Four Corners. She was truly a special person who will be greatly missed by family and friends. Survivors include: three sons, Leroy M. Ortego of Baton Rouge, Steven D. Ortego and Michael G. Ortego, both of Ville Platte; two daughters, Christine O. Slaven of Ville Platte and Sandra O. He was very active with the St. Landry Parish Drainage Board for over 40 years and was also a volunteer fireman for the village of Cankton. Mr. Savoie was a parishioner of St. John Berchman Catholic Church in Cankton. He was a veteran of the military, having served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Survivors include: his wife, Elida Roger Savoie of Vatican; a son, R.J. Savoie and his wife, Carole of Bosco; a daughter, Laura Savoie Lyons and her husband, Wilber of Bosco; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Brother Hanchett was a well-known businessman who was the founder, owner and operator of Vinson's Wayside Inn and Cab Company where he serviced the community for 45 years, and the Cab company is still in existence. He also operated the Miracle Lounge for 9 years. Brother Hanchett served faithfully as a Laymen at Mt. Olive. He also was a member of the Keystone 196 Masonic Lodge and a veteran of World War II. He later received a Master of Education degree from Southern University, Baton Rouge in 1993. Mr. Johnson began his career in Education as Band Director in St. Martin Parish and subsequently in Iberia, Acadia and St. Landry Parishes. Currently Mr. Johnson was employed at Park Vista Elementary in Opelousas as Assistant Principal. He was also employed in the Upward Bound Summer Residential Program at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (formerly USL) since 1994 and a former participant in the Upward Bound Program. Mr. Johnson was a member/affiliate of numerous professional and fraternal organizations including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He was the recipient of numerous awards and honors including: "Teacher of the Year "Beau Chene High School 1993) and North Central High School "Teacher of the Year" (1998). "Teacher of the Year" St. Landry Parish (1993 & 1998), and Louisiana Regional Finalist "Teacher of the Year" (1993). In addition, Mr. Johnson was also awarded "Educator of the Year" by Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc (1993). His musical awards were numerous achieving superior ratings, first place awards including Grand Champion for "Best High School Band Performance", Krewe of Poseidon Mardi Gras Parade competition-New Orleans, 1992. Mr. Johnson was perhaps best known for his ability to identify, nurture and stimulate his students to achieve excellence in their endeavors. He was noted for his warm friendly smile and his caring and compassionate manner reflected in his encounters with both his colleagues and the students he served. Mr. Thaddeus Johnson will be sadly missed by all who had the opportunity to know and love him. He truly blessed the lives of those he touched. She was a pioneer in the field receiving her certification from The University of Pennsylvania in 1947. She was an avid camper, belonging to The Bayou Campers Club. Most will remember her as a meticulous seamstress and an outstanding cook. She belonged to the Lamplighters Home Demonstration Club and the Friendship Quilter Club. Taking up tennis after her retirement, she had a love of the sport and the camaraderie. She was the captain of the Beaver Park I Tennis team and a member of TALL. She loved to travel and was an active member of CODOFIL. She will sorely missed by her family and friends. However, she will live on in our hearts and in the talents she shared with us. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to all of the wonderful supportive friends and family that helped her through her illness. Special thanks to Rev. John Deleeuw for his accommodating spiritual support. She chose to have Hospice of Acadiana care for her during the past four months. She was extremely grateful for their expertise and compassion. Mrs. Darjean, the former Linda Gayle Grayson, died at 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, in Opelousas General Hospital. She was a native and lifelong resident of Sunset and had been employed as a cashier at Beau Chene Truck Stop in Grand Coteau. Mrs. Darjean was a parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Judge Shaw died Friday Dec. 24, 1999 in Lafayette General Medical Center. He was a native of Beaumont, Texas. He attended Tulane University in New Orleans and obtained a bachelor of science at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. He earned his bachelor of science in law from Louisiana St. University and also a juris degree from LSU. At LSU, Judge Shaw served on the Law Review staff as associate editor and was a member of Phi Delta Phi. He was a veteran of military service having served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958 entering with the rank of first lieutenant and was honorably discharged with the rank of captain. Judge Shaw was a partner in the law firm of Lewis and Lewis in Opelousas until his appointment as a judge. He was appointed U.S. district court in September of 1978 and chief U.S. district judge for the western district of Louisiana from Jan. 1, 1991 to Nov. 15, 1996 when he took senior status. Judge Shaw published a number of articles in the Louisiana Law Review and was a member of the Federal Judges Association and the Fifth Circuit Judges Association. He guided the plans for the completion of the new federal court house that was dedicated to Lafayette in March 1999. Survivors include: his wife, the former Glenda LeDoux of Lafayette; four children, Dr. John Shaw of Bogata, Colombia, South America; Stacy Shaw Walpole of Houston, Texas, Paulette Taylor of Arnaudville and Pippa O. Fann of Houston, Texas; and 10 grandchildren.
