Schexnayder Jun 20 2000 12:00AM By By STEPHANIE KIRK Staff Writer Friends, church and family members remember the Rev. Daniel Schexnayder Jr. as a friendly, helpful person. The Catholic priest died Monday morning of a heart attack. "I was happy to be his classmate back in high school and his good friend for almost 50 years," said the Rev. Monsignor Louis J. Melancon, pastor of St. Peter Catholic Church in Washington. The Rev. Schexnayder spent more than 37 years in the ministry. According to the Lafayette Catholic Diocese, Schexnayder was the pastor at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Leonville for nine years. He was assigned to the church in Aug. 16, 1991. Schexnayder was ordained in the Lafayette Diocese May 25, 1963. He has since served about nine Catholic churches throughout South Louisiana. Schexnayder's first assignment was as pastor of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Scott in 1963. He served there for four years. Then he served as associate pastor at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Lake Charles, St. Michael's Catholic Church in Crowley, St. Martin de Tours in St. Martinville, and was assigned as pastor of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Duson, along with St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Patterson. He also served at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kaplan and at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Eunice. Members say Schexnayder was a personable man. "I (photographed) several weddings at the church and he always did what he could to be helpful," said Freddie Herpin, a church member. Melancon referred to Schexnayder as a just and good man. He said Schexnayder was friendly and helpful to all his people and believed in assisting them at church fairs, bazaars and other events that would make money to renovate the churches and build other buildings on the parish grounds. "Even though he had a German name, Schexnayder, he was definitely a Cajun and rooted in our wonderful Cajun culture," he said. Melancon also referred to his friend as one who "loved and lived life." But when it came to the church, Schexnayder was a man of discipline and prayer, he said. "Dan was faithful to people in all of the parishes he served," Melancon said. Schexnayder was noted for visiting the sick and elderly faithfully. "The young people were close to his heart, as he prepared them for marriage and for life," Melancon said. A younger cousin, the Rev. Gary Schexnayder, pastor of St. Edmond Catholic Church in Lafayette, said, "He was an inspiration to me and he was dedicated to his family as well as to the church." "He was a delightful person who was very helpful and dedicated to the ministry," his cousin said. "He will be greatly missed by lots of people," he said. ===================================================================== Wednesday -- June 21, 2000 OBITUARIES: Winona Comeaux, Ollie Fontenot, Dorothy Pitre.
