Our beloved, Peter Smith Sr. answered the call on the evening of August 29, 2000, at 10:40 p.m. in Lafayette General Medical Center. Pop, as he is fondly called by family and friends, was born December 28, 1928. He was born the second child of the late Clement and Laura Smith. He was nurtured in a Christian home where he was taught the principles of a good Life. Peter enjoyed a successful life as a family man, business man and politician. As a family man, he and his wife worked together to raise their nine children and one foster child. As a business man he was self employed for many years as a general contractor. As a politician, he was Mayor of Grand Coteau for 10 years and a political figure since 1965. He was a member of the Louisiana Municipal Gas Association, commissioner on the Krotz Springs Port Commission, served for 27 years on the Tri-Parish Board that served the elderly, appointed to serve as vice president at large on the Louisiana Municipal Association Executive Board, a member of the Louisiana Association of Community Services Organization Inc. Legislative Committee, appointed by the LMA board of directors to serve on the Intergovernmental Relation Committee, selected as one of Louisiana's Outstanding Black Citizens by the executive committee of the United Business Alliance of Louisiana, member of the Sunset Advisory Board, member of the Grand Coteau Preservation Association, named by Gov. Edwards as a delegate to the 1995 White House Conference of Aging, member of the Louisiana Racing Commission, member of the Economic Inducement Industrial Development Commission, still a member of the Grand Coteau Fire Department and member of the Knights of Peter Claver. Peter has endeared himself to many, especially his family. He was never too busy or too tired to take up time in meaningful conversation with his children. His encouraging words to them were always a source of strength. He will be remembered by all for his firm, yet kind, outspoken, loving and peaceful way of life and for a smile that could make any and every day Brighter. Ms. Fontenot served the people of the Lewisburg community for many years. She was the recipient of the Humanitarian of the Year Award by the Opelousas-St. Landry Chamber of Commerce in 1991, when they acknowledged her generous and loving spirit to her fellow man. She will fondly be remembered as Momo Fontenot by her family and many friends. She was 53 years old. Mrs. Mouton, who was admitted to the hospital Monday, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma 16 months earlier. She began her nearly three-decade long teaching career at Northeast Elementary and later transferred to Cresswell Elementary before finally finishing in special education at Park Vista Elementary. During those years she taught and influenced hundreds of children in Opelousas. As a dedicated special education teacher, Mrs. Mouton devoted much of her time and services to the Special Olympics, helping many of her students become successful Special Olympic athletes along the way. Also, Mrs. Mouton was an active member of her church and delivered readings regularly on Sundays for more than 15 years to the St. Landry Parish Church congregation, of which she was a life-long member. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7 Neil A. Bertinot, 69, died at his residence in Opelousas at 7:25 a.m. September 25, 2000. He was diagnosed with esophageal cancer almost three years ago. Neil served in the United States Air Force. Mr. Bertinot was a graduate of SLI in Lafayette in Agricultural Engineering. He was assistant manager of Bertinot Tractor & Implement Company in Opelousas until its closure. He was service manger at Bordelon Motors for two years, and then taught Civil Engineering Technology at T.H. Harris Vocational Technical School for 20 years, becoming the head of the department. He was an avid gardener, specializing in hybridization of Louisiana irises. Mr. Bertinot was a member of the Louisiana Iris Association, and won many awards for his work. He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Angels church parish, and a member of the choir until his illness.
