Mr. Speyrer died at 8 a.m. Sept. 30, 2000 of congestive heart failure in his home. Mr. Speyrer was a native of Leonville and a resident of Opelousas for the past 48 years. He graduated from Opelousas High School and attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He was a World War II U.S. Air Force veteran; a real estate broker, developer and appraiser for the past 40 years; and parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Angels. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and the Woodsman of the World. The family wishes to thank the many doctors and nurses who cared for him as well as Hospice of St. Landry. He was a tractor and furniture dealer who operated Dewey Ledoux Tractor Co. and Furniture for 43 years in the City of Opelousas. Mr. Ledoux was a Korean War Army Veteran. He was very active in the Sacred Heart Chapel of Prairie Ronde. Mr. Ledoux was a favorite Gumbo Cook for church bazaars and served on the fund raising committee. He also was an usher and a member of the choir for many years. Mr. Ledoux was a quiet man of few words who was always cooking up a feast for family and friends to enjoy. He carried on a tradition of making huge Sunday dinners and holiday meals throughout the years. Mr. Ledoux will be sadly missed by all who knew him and loved him. He was a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus Opelousas Council, member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion of Opelousas. Later he joined the U.S. Air Force and served as their Recreational/Sports Director. While in the service he was a participant in baseball, basketball and boxing. Being an avid sportsman, he was a die-hard Saints fan. As a member of St. Landry Catholic Church, he served as an Eucharistic Minister until his illness kept him from doing so. John also belonged to the Knights of Columbus Council 1173, American Legion Post #0045 and Woodman of the World organization. Mr. Broussard, a native of Cankton and a resident of Grand Coteau, died at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, October 7, 2000, in Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette. He was the owner and operator of Bruces Electric for 25 years and had been employed as a School Bus Driver for St. Landry Parish for 37 years. For over 20 years, Mr. Broussard was a Lobbyist for Support Personnel and School Bus Operators, served on the Louisiana School Employees Retirement System Board of Trustees, and served as State President with the Louisiana School Bus Operators Association for 10 years. He had been a lector and active member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Grand Coteau and was a 3rd and 4th degree member of the Knights of Peter Claver. Mr. Broussard has also formerly served as Town of Grand Coteau Alderman for 27 years. Kermit David CHURCH POINT - A Mass of Christian Burial were held at 2 p.m. today (Tuesday, Oct. 17) in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church here for Kermit G. David, 88, who died Monday morning, October 16, 2000, in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette. Interment will be in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Born April 20, 1912, Mr. David was a native of Church Point who resided in Lafayette for the last 11 years. He was a 1934 graduate of LSU in Mechanical Engineering. During World War II, Mr. David served as an engineer with the United State Maritime Commission in the design, construction and testing of troop and cargo ships. He also served as an Air Raid Warden in New Orleans for the duration. Following the war, he returned to Church Point to take over a general merchandise store opened by his father in 1893. He operated this business, first as David's Department Store and later as David's of Church Point, Inc. until his retirement in 1976. For the next several years, he worked with his son, James L. David, in the continuation of the family business into it's third generation. After moving to Lafayette in 1989, Mr. David worked actively with SCORE, an organization dedicated to the assistance of small business owners. Mr. David was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years and served several terms on the City Council of Church Point. He was active in his support of the Boy Scouts throughout his adult life. He was a member of the development committee for the build of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church. In the 1980's, he served as Chairman of the committee that undertook the renovation and restoration of the church. Mr. David is survived by his wife of 64 years, Aline Daigle David; four sons, David F. David husband of Maria Velasquez David of Abilene, Texas, James L. David husband of Elizabeth Fleck David of Church Point, Douglas P. David husband of Rogenia McGehee David of Poquoson, Va., and Paul B. David husband of Marla Locus David of Lafayette; a daughter, Mary David Oriol wife of Richard Dale Oriol of Thibodaux; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Guidry died noon, Saturday, October 28, 2000, at the Acadia-St. Landry Hospital in Church Point. Survivors include: a son, Mayus "Mitch" LeJeune of Church Point; six grandchildren, Albert Meche, Ronnie Meche, James Meche, Judy Guidry, Lucille LeJeune and Sandra Ardoin; 12 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Guidry was preceded in death by her first husband, Martin LeJeune; her second husband, Elie Guidry; her mother and father; four brothers; and five sisters. Hannah Mitchell Funeral services for Miss Hannah Drusilla Mitchell, 93, will be held 3 p.m. Sunday in the Sibille Funeral Home chapel with burial in Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. George Crocker of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Miss Mitchell died 6:35 p.m., Friday, October 27, 2000, at the Senior Village Nursing Home. Miss Mitchell was one of the first members of the Frontier Nursing Service, under the sponsorship of a Mrs. Breckinridge of New York, they were known as the "Nurses on Horseback." the group traveled through the hills of Kentucky ministering to the sick and delivering babies. After Miss Mitchell delivered her 5,000 baby, she quit counting. While working for the U.S. Health Department, she spent several years in Panama as an instructor in midwifery and later, in North Africa. Miss Mitchell received her nursing degree from John Brown University in New York and her master degree from Columbia University. While studying for her doctorate she became ill and was unable to finish. During Miss Mitchell's life, she worked as an administrator for the Georgia Department of Health she worked with cripple children and in obstetric and gynecology. She was the producer of the instructional film, "All My Children," which is used world wide as a teaching tool. In 1982 she was presented an award by the World Health Organization for her work at improving the care of babies in home deliveries. Miss Mitchell made her home in Opelousas eight years ago, living with her sister-in-law, Nan Langford Mitchell. She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Schoen, died Friday, October 27, 2000 at her Arnaudville residence. Mrs. Stryzewski was a native of Green Bay, Wis. and a resident of Opelousas for seven years. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. Mrs. Stryzewski enjoyed baking and cake decorating, which brought her much joy, as well as her beloved family. Survivors include: her mother, Joyce E. Sturgis Sr., 87, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Francis Regis Catholic Church here with burial in the church mausoleum. The Rev. William Ruskoski, pastor of St. Francis Regis Catholic Church, will conduct the services. Mr. Sturgis, a native of Crystal Springs, Miss., a former resident of St. Martinville, and had been a resident of Arnaudville for over 30 years, died at 1:35 p.m. Monday, October 30, 2000, at his residence in Arnaudville. He was an All American High School football player in Crystal Springs, Miss., and attended and played football at Mississippi State University and Southeastern University in Hammond. He was a veteran of the military served in the U.S. Army Air Corp and the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Sturgis coached football at St. Martinville High School and Opelousas High School in the 1940's and 1950's. He was retired from the St. Landry Parish School System with 38 years of service as a supervisor, principal and teacher and was at Arnaudville High School for 17 years. Mr. Sturgis also served as principal at Little Flower Elementary in Arnaudville for 7 years. He was Secretary of St. Landry Parish, H.U.D. for 18 years. Mr. Sturgis was a parishioner of St. Francis Regis Catholic Church in Arnaudville and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Arnaudville VFW Post 5153.
