He was a 1943 graduate of Sunset High School, a member of the Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus and the Civil Air Patrol. She also read the readings for every funeral for 2 1/2 years and worked with the Day of Adoration once a week ending with Scripture readings, songs and benediction. Dr. Speyrer, a native of Opelousas and the son of the late Gabriel Speyrer Sr. and Celina Rivette Speyrer, both natives of Leonville, died Tuesday, January 9, 2001, at a local hospital from a brief illness. Upon graduation from Opelousas High School, he attended USL, graduating in pre-veterinarian; he then completed medical school at Texas A&M, receiving his degree in Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine. He was then employed by Dr. Quilty in Lake Charles and then for one year with the State of Louisiana. Dr. Speyrer then opened his own veterinarian clinic and he was well known in the area for this kind and compassionate care of his patients. Dr. Speyrer is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Wilda Savoie Speyrer of Lafayette; a son and his wife, David Wayne and Elizabeth Speyrer of Lafayette; two daughters and their husbands, Donna and Scotty Bearb of Houston, Texas, and Debra and Mitchel Leleux of Humble, Texas; his mother, Celina Rivette Speyrer of Opelousas; three brothers and their wives, Robert and Claire Speyrer and Gabriel Jr. and Ann Speyrer, all of Opelousas, and Charles and Tanya Speyrer of Monroe; two sisters, Celina Latour of Abbeville and Julia Hesser and her husband Gary of Shreveport; as well as his eight grandchildren of whom he was so proud, Joey, Taylor, Victoria, Tommy, Matthew, Brittani, Collin and Ariel. Sam Tarleton LAKE CHARLES - Funeral services for Sam Tarleton, 91, of Lake Charles will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Consolata Cemetery. The Rev. Whitney Miller will officiate. Mr. Tarleton died at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in an Austin, Texas hospital. Mr. Tarleton was a native of New Orleans and attended Jesuit High School. Mr. Tarleton was one of the first baseball players drafted by the Opelousas Tigers in the Evangeline League. He also played briefly with the St. Louis Cardinal organization. While in Opelousas playing semi-pro baseball, Mr. Tarleton began writing a sports column for the local newspaper that would become the Opelousas Daily World. he was one of the first reporters to report the death of Huey P. Long to the New York press. Mr. Tarleton enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and served as a sergeant in a machine gun platoon assigned to Gen. George Patton. During Patton's march across Europe, Mr. Tarleton was wounded twice effectively ending his pro baseball career. he did receive the Silver and Bronze Stars as well as two Purple Hearts. In 1949, Mr. Tarleton was transferred to Lake Charles as a sportswriter for the Beaumont Enterprise. Over the years, he worked as a newspaper publisher, editor and reporter at various newspapers in Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas, including the Lake Charles American Press. In 1957, Mr. Tarleton was elected as Commissioner of Health and Public Safety overseeing the fire and police departments. Mr. Tarleton's career was not limited to newspaper reporting. In 1961, he went on the air with a local television station and broadcast what was probably the first sports show. Known by his radio and TV fans as "The Old Lefthander" or "Lefty," Mr. Tarleton broadcast the first transmission delay of a baseball game when a Louisiana team played in the national playoffs and no local broadcaster could attend. Mr. Tarleton was an active member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars. He also was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and served several terms as the state DAV public relations officer. Mr. Tarleton was an usher at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception for 51 years. Mr. Tarleton is survived by a daughter, Dr. Ann Tarleton of Austin, Texas; two brothers, James B. Msgr. Fred Swenson will conduct the services. Dr. Williams, a resident of Church Point, died at 9 a.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2001, at his residence. He was retired medical doctor. Dr. Williams received his B.S. Degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed his medical studies at Louisiana State University Medical School in New Orleans. He enrolled in the U.S. Army serving the Pacific Theatre as a Major in the 1st Air Calvary and was awarded two purple hearts, a silver star and a bronze star. Upon returning from active duty in 1945 he engaged in the practice of medicine serving the residents of Church Point for 40 years until retiring in 1985. He was the first Chief of Staff at Acadia-St. Landry Hospital and a member of the American Medical Association, Louisiana Medical Association and Acadia Parish Medical Association as well as a member of American Legion Post 225 of Church Point. Survivors include: his wife, Dr. Alyce Arretteig Williams, M.D., of Church Point; two sons, Dr. John W. Williams III of Dadeville, Ala., and Charles M. She returned to school at Southwestern Louisiana Institute where she graduated and received her B.A. in 1942. Ms. Myers graduated from Opelousas High School which was at the time called Paul Pavy, her class of 26 was the largest class the school had ever graduated. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, AARP and St. Landry Catholic Church. Survivors include: a brother, Joseph Myers of Opelousas; a half brother, Robert Leo Myers of Lafayette; and a half sister, Mrs. Ernest (Rose Mary) Pisco of Norwick, Ohio. She was a graduate of Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va. Mrs. Bailey was an active volunteer worker for civic and charitable organizations including the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society and the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas. She was a state and national officer in the Daughters of the American Revolution and was particularly proud of being listed in Whos Who of America for her services to civic and charitable organizations. Mrs. Bailey was married to Robert L. Bailey Jr., who preceded her in death, and is survived by two sons, Pearce Bailey of Sandler, Texas, and Robert L.
