The Rev. Gene Tremie will conduct the services. Mr. Cahanin, a resident of Opelousas, died at 2:20 p.m. on April 5, 2001 at Our Lady/Lourdes Regional Medical Center. Survivors include: Wife Juliet M. Cahanin of Opelousas, three sons, Gregory James Cahanin of St. Petersburg, FL, Lee Alan Cahanin and wife Cathy of Opelousas, and Carl Patrick Cahanin Sr. of Tampa, FL; two daughters, Karen Marie Robillard of St. Francisville and Mary Beth Andrepont and husband Don of Lafayette, one brother Robert A. Cahanin of Zwolle, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr. Cahanin, oJimmie, was born in December 1927. After high school in Opelousas, he attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He married in 1948, raised five children and had 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Jimmie was always active in Hope, Hook & Ladder Volunteer Fire Company #1. He was elected mascot in 1939, became an active volunteer in 1944, and became a Life Member in 1988. He was hired by the City of Opelousas Fire Department on January 16, 1957 and was appointed Fire Chief in 1966 where he served until his retirement in 1988. During his tenure as fire chief, the Opelousas Fire Department increased fire protection through the addition of firefighters and upgraded fire trucks. The Central Fire Station was designed and built under his administration. Jimmies accomplishments were many. He was an instructor at Louisiana Fire College, involved in the National Fire Prevention & Control Administration on Master Planning, served on the Louisiana Commission on Firefighter Personnel Standards and Education, the Louisiana Municipal Association Alert Program for Fire Protection, and the LSU at Eunice Citizens Advisory Committee. He served on and was chairman of the Louisiana Fire Prevention Board of Review. He served as State vice president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, and on the Joint Council of Fire Service Organizations. He was a life member of the Louisiana Firemens Association, where he served as district representative, vice president and president. Jimmie was recognized by receiving a letter of commendation from President Richard Nixon for contributions to the National Commission on Fire Prevention and Control. He was awarded the Hope, Hook & Ladder Volunteer Award, the VFW commendation for life saving. The Louisiana Fire Chiefs and the Louisiana State Firemens Association Conferences have been dedicated in his name. He was elected to the Louisiana Fire Chiefs Hall of Fame. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. A procession from Lafond-Ardoin funeral home on South Union Street to St. Landry Catholic Church will begin at 1:45 p.m. on Monday. Friends and family are invited to attend a reception following the service at the Hope, Hook & Ladder fire station on the corner of Bellevue and Union streets. Miss Thibodeaux, a native and resident of Cankton, having lived in Opelousas for 50 years, died at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in Opelousas General Hospital. Prior to her retirement in January 1992 she was employed by the state for 49 years. She was first employed by the Welfare Department for three years and later transferred to the St. Landry Parish Health Unit where she was employed for 46 years. Having the longest employment record in that office, the Police Jury placed a plaque of appreciation in the waiting room of that office. While living in Opelousas she was a member of St. Landry Catholic Church. Miss Thibodeaux was a member of the Catholic Daughters and received her 50 year pin in 1997 where she had served the court in several capacities. In 1988 she was named Catholic Daughter of the Year. As a member of St. John Berchman's Catholic Church in Cankton she served many years as a volunteer office worker on weekends and her days off. She was also a member of the Altar Society. Survivors include: two sisters, Vergie T. Crimmins of Dallas, Texas, and Hilda Thibodeaux of Cankton; 15 nieces and nephews; 29 great-nieces and nephews; and a great-great-niece. Miss Thibodeaux was preceded in death by her parents, Laurent A. Thibodeaux and the former Marie Emelie Prejean; three brothers, Aaron Thibodeaux, Ophie Thibodeaux and Leroy Thibodeaux; and a sister, Hester T. Herpin.
