Smith Sr. and the former Jeanne Marie Webre, was born in Shreveport, died at 1 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at his residence. He grew up in New Orleans, graduating from Jesuit High School and Tulane University, and L.S.U. Medical School in New Orleans. Following two years service in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps and one year general residency training at Lafayette Charity Hospital, he entered private practice in Lake Charles in 1953. In 1955 he moved to Lafayette, where he served the community as a General Practitioner in association with the Hamilton Medical Group until his retirement in 1988. He served as medical Director for the Group from 1977 to 1984. Dr. Smith was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #3470 and a member of St. Pius X Parish. He was for seven years a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. John's Cathedral Parish and was a member and twice past president of the Carmelite Monastery Guild. He served on the first Parish Council of Our Lady of Fatima Church, one year as its president, and was a member of Fatima's first class of Eucharistic Ministers. He has been active in the Jesuit Retreat movement for 40 years, and served as Captain for the October retreat at Our Lady of the Oaks for 20 years. He was a past member of the Retreat House Advisory Board, and the Advisory Board of the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau. He was also actively involved in Directed Retreats, offered at the Jesuit Spirituality Center in Grand Coteau, attending an 8-day private retreat there every year since these retreats began in 1974. He has been active in the Cursillo movement since 1964. He was a lector at St. Pius X Church, and a member of their Social Action Committee. He was a member of the St. Francis Prayer Group and the Dwyer Group. Dr. Smith was a co-founder of the Acadiana Right to Life Committee in 1974, and spoke extensively on the sanctity of human life to church and civic groups and in classrooms throughout Acadiana. He contributed a pro-life column to The Acadiana Catholic regularly since 1986. Since his retirement from private practice in 1988 Dr. Smith has worked as a volunteer physician with Hospice of Acadiana, offering physical, emotional and spiritual support to the dying and their families. He has served as the Medical Director since 1992. Dr. Smith is survived by his wife, the former Jane Bernadette Boudreaux, and four children, Dr. J. Jerome Smith and wife Germaine, Mrs. Raymond (Nancy) Domingue, Mrs. Gerald (Mary Anne) Bertrand, and David L. She also attended SLI (now ULL) and began teaching in Basile, where she met and married J. Howard LaFleur. In 1946, they opened a Children's Clothing Store, LaFleur's Tot 'N' Teen Shop in Opelousas. She retired from the business in 1970. Helena was a talented artist and specialized in watercolors. She won many awards for her paintings. She was very active in community service and was a founding member of the Opelousas Art League. In 1982, she was honored with a one-man show in the Zigler Museum in Jennings. One of her favorite activities was her work with the Academy of the Sacred Heart Alumnae Association. The Rev. Nicodemus K. Ampong conducted the services. Mrs. Nicholson, curator of the Nicholson House of History, died at 8:12 p.m. Sunday, May 27, 2001, peacefully at her residence. She was an accomplished horsewoman, won many prizes statewide. Mrs. Nicholson always lead the Yambilee parade, riding on her silver saddle and carrying the American flag. She was spiritual and a loving wife and mother. Mildred was her own person and you knew where you stood with her. She had high morals and was always a lady. Mildred loved life and people to the end. She was a pillar of the community and always lent an ear to those in need. Mrs. Nicholson was active with the Washington Historical Society, local tourism and will be remembered and missed. Her spirit will be watching over her family and community. For all of us who knew Mildred Nicholson, we are a better person for knowing her. Those who knew her well remember her laughter, love of life and the beat of such a local legend.
