Mrs. Fontenot belonged to Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority at L.S.U. in Baton Rouge, where she earned a B.S. degree in Elementary Education in 1962. Throughout her 35-year career, she taught in Texas, New York state and in the La. parishes of St. Landry, Rapides and Avoyelles. She was honored as "Teacher of the Year" in Avoyelles Parish. In addition to teaching grade levels K-8, Mrs. Fontenot volunteered as a 4-H, cheerleader and flag corps sponsor. She was also a Girl Scout leader and a tennis coach. Former students will remember her love of good books, choral readings, geography and science/social studies fair projects. She also enjoyed designing costumes for Moncla Comm. Theatre, Fox Theatre, City Park Players and Ballet Alexandria. Mrs. Fontenot was a parishioner and catechist at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marksville. The New Zion Baptist Church, which presently stands on Nimitz Street, was one of the biggest jobs built under his leadership. Not only did he use his talents to further develop his carpentry craft, but he also used them in his church. While a member of New Zion Baptist Church, he served in numerous capacities. He served as Chairman of the Deacon Board, Superintendent of the Sunday School, church secretary and a member of the Male Chorus. Mr. Burleigh was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force served from 1958-61. He was a graduate of USL, received a BS degree in Petroleum Engineering. Mr. Burleigh was employed by Chevron Oil Co. for 1964 to 1990. Survivors include: a brother, Edgar S.
