Harris was born in Barbreck, Louisiana, to the union of the late Walter Leon Harris and Selina Smith Harris. "J.T." accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized at Mount Triumph Baptist Church in Barbreck, Louisiana. Shortly thereafter, his family moved to Opelousas, where he joined Mount Olive Baptist Church. As a young man "J.T." lifted up his praises to the Lord by joining and becoming an active member of the Male Chorus. Always mindful of God's promise to his people; "J.T." embarked upon a difficult, dangerous and challenging journey. It was a journey that would define his character, his life and his love for our people. James "J.T." Harris had a long history in the fight for civil rights. "No greater love than a man has where he would lay down his life for his friends;" was the message that he took to heart. He was an advocate for equality and equity for our people. He expected it, demanded it and ultimately got it from everyone who knew him. He opened his heart, his home and his wallet to assist in the struggle. "J.T." along with the Rev. Dr. Charles Bryant, Attorney Marion O. White, the late Rev. Willie Pitre, Alton Broussard, the late Aristile Carmon, Attorney Richard Millspaugh, Robert Fenelon and a host of hardworking individuals launched the St. Landry Parish Branch of the N.A.A.C.P. and became its charter members. Throughout the turbulent 60's, "J.T." fought to integrate all segments of the parish. He worked tirelessly to reapportion the city, parish and state to ensure that blacks were evenly represented in newly created districts. The 70's saw the fruits of his labors ripen when he along with Alton Broussard and Howard Austin became the first African Americans elected to the St. Landry Parish Police Jury. "J.T." also served as a member of the Louisiana Health Systems Governing Board and was responsible for the expansion of Opelousas General Hospital and the relocation and expansion of Doctors' Hospital, he also fought to bring the Artificial Kidney Center to Opelousas. The 80's saw another challenge to the equality of African Americans fade away. "J.T." along with a group of African American attorneys drafted a letter to President Reagan to inform him of the lack of African American judges in the state of Louisiana. President Reagan authorized the Justice Department to investigate this disparity and they filed suit on behalf of him and the delegation of African American attorney's. The state of Louisiana was forced to change the way that judicial districts were apportioned and African Americans gained unprecedented representation. Mourning his departure, yet celebrating his life is his wife of 43 years, Gloria H. Harris; his daughters, Patrice and Kim; Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Scoggins his brother and sister-in-law; Earline Green a sister-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and loved ones.
