"Count each affliction, whether light or grave, 'tis God sent it down to thee." That is the philosophy, the heart solace, of Aubrey deVere-it is the teaching of Holy Writ. The thought is doubtless a solace in a way. But how can grief be sedate, equable, plaint even to the lesson taught by the words of the Almighty, when the loved one - the mate of a life-time, the sun of one's heart and the flower of one's heart and the flower of one's existence - lies in the chill embrace of Death? The marble-white face, the still form, the veiled head and feet, the clammy shroud, the folded hands, the shimmering holy candles in ghostlike fits and spirts - Oh! where is the heart stout enough to wrap itself in the mantle of Omnipotent Will and say: "It is God's work, I am content?"
