Interment will follow in Bellevue Memorial Park. Father Angelo Cremaldi will celebrate the Mass. Alex died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, April 6, 2010. 2:10 AM. Despite the physical limitations of Parkinsons Disease, Alex remained determined to be optimistic throughout his struggle. In the Chachere tradition, Alex lived life to the fullest. He was a world traveler, a boxing enthusiast and an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a true businessman, having operated Tony Chachere Sons Insurance Agency with his brother, Doug Chachere, and brotherinlaw, James Wallace, from 1969 through 1981. He was a certified life underwriter. Beginning in 1982, Alex was President and CEO of Tony Chachere Creole Foods until his retirement in 2000, bringing the local Opelousas company to national prominence. During his tenure, Alex was named 1991 Louisiana Small Business Person of the year. In retirement, Alex remained a member of the Board of Directors of Tony Chachere Creole Foods. Alex was a long time member of the Opelousas Elks Lodge 1048. He will be remembered as generous to his employees, loyal to his friends and loving to his family. His determination and independent spirit will be greatly missed. Survivors include his Children: Cindy Dejean and husband Tommy of Opelousas, Sherry Ann, of Lafayette, and stepson, Kelby Gerstle of Opelousas , two grand children: Silas DeJean and Fawn Larson, brother, Douglas Chachere and wife Cathy of Opelousas, sisters Patricia Pat Chachere Castille of Opelousas, and Jeannine Chachere Wallace, and husband Jim, of Opelousas. Alex was the son of the late Anthony Tony Chachere, Sr., and Patricia Kerr Chachere. He was also preceded in death by his wife: Deanna Dohmann Chachere, and former wife Lee Wimberly, brothers Donald DonA. Chachere, Sr. and Anthony Chachere, Jr., A special Thanks to Demoricka Thomas, Dwana Dabney, Virginia Levier and Rolanda Murphy. Pallbearers will be James Wallace, Jr., Donald A. Chachere, Jr., Alex B. Chachere II, Silas DeJean, Dean Riviere, Paul Desthotel and Kelby Gerstle. Honorary Pallbearers will be Nutsy Quirk, Don Deshotel, Doug Chachere, Blue Meyers, Charles Hollier, George Ramier, John Olivier, Leslie Schiff, Lowell Sibille, Jr., Judge Kenny Boagni, Lee Halphen, and Dr. Ronnie Padgett. Visiting hours will be observed in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. On Thursday, visitation will continue in the funeral home from 8:30 a.m. until service time. An Elks service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening in the funeral home. A Rosary service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening in the funeral home.
