Old Citizen Goes To His Long Rest

Antoine Christman, aged 88 years, 9 months and 11 days, died at the home of 
his daughter, Mrs. Fannie C. Bowden, in this city last Wednesday night at 
9:40 o'clock. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon, with services at the 
Catholic Church and interment in the Catholic cemetery. The remains of 
"Grandpa" Christman were followed to their last resting place by a large 
concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends.

Mr. Christman was born in the town of Daun, Alsace, and came to this country 
in 1845, and settled in Opelousas where he grew to manhood, residing here 
all his life with the exception of a few years when he lived in Rayne. His 
wife was a Miss Malbina Benguerelle of this city, and to them were born 
seven children, six of whom survive. The wife died many years ago. The 
surviving children are Mrs. T. P. Bowden, Mrs. P. J. Manouvrier, Mrs. H. C. 
Poulet of Opelousas; Mrs. A. S. Chappuis of Rayne; Abram J. of Lake Charles, 
and R. B. of Opelousas.

Grandpa Christman was esteemed by all who knew him. His fine disposition and 
lack of ostentation endeared him to all, and the residents of this city, as 
well as those of other towns where he was well known, regret the passing of 
this venerable citizen. To his children and granchildren, all of whom did 
all in their power to prolong his life, The Clarion tenders its condolences.

Antoine Christman is buried in section 10 at the St. Landry Catholic Church 
cemetery located in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana.
