F. Clopton, president of the Police Jury, of St. Landry parish, and a prominent planter and merchant of Morrow, died on Tuesday morning at seven- thirty, after an illness of two weeks. He was burried (sic) in the Protestant cemetery, near Big Cane, where a large number of friends and relatives of the deceased assembled to pay their last tribute to an old resident of St. Landry. Dr. Clopton was elected president of the Police Jury; in July 1900, and was re-elected there after until his death. He was one of the most successful planters of this section, having accumulated a nice fortune. Dr. Clopton died at the age of sixty-five. In his ward Dr. Clopton was a power politically, whilst he had hundreds of friends and admirers throughout the parish. The Clerk of the Police Jury, Mr. J. J. Healey, and several members of the police jury attended the funeral of their chief, as also Sheriff Swords and other friends of Dr. Clopton from this city. The death of the president of the police jury was a surprise to his Opelousas friends. Although they had been apprised of the serious illness of Dr. Clopton, they hoped that he would soon recover. Dr. Clopten (sic) will most probably be replaced by Mr. J. T. St. Cyr, who is president pro tempore (sic) of the police jury. Whilst the parish lawmakers will miss their former chief very much they will no doubt continue working on the same progressive lines as they have been persuing (sic) under Dr. Clopton with such an able man as Mr. St. Cyr. Dr. Clopton's work as a public officer was exceptionally good. He made a splendid record not only as a member, but also as the head of the police jury of St. Landry. In him this parish loses a good officer a fine citizen and a prosperous farmer. It will be many years before the memory of him will be effaced among the people of St. Landry, who knew and admired Dr. Clopton. Additional Comments: NOTE: Dr. William F. Clopton is buried at the Big Cane Baptist Church cemetery located in Morrow, St. Landry Parish, LA. www.findagrave.com memorial # 142989513 File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/stlandry/obits/c/clopton5602gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/lafiles/ File size: 2.7 Kb
