Cochran - Died, at the family residence, in Opelousas, on Sunday night, March 18, 1905, at 7 o'clcok, William R. Cochran, aged 60 years, 2 months and 16 days. Life is but a span. At every swing of the pendulum a spirit goes into eternity. It is a tale that is soon told. Its rapidity is like the swift shuttle, or the fading flower, the transitory rainbow, or the dazzling meteor! Death is ever busy. He spares neither youth nor age. Like a spoiler, he comes in the meridian of day, or the solemn gloom of night, and alike satiates his thirst upon the tender brow of beauty, or ripe manhood's prime, or the frosty head. "Uncle Bill" Cochran was wafted into the Unknown Country almost before his loved ones and his host of friends could realize he was ill. Monday night he attended his duties as clerk of the city council at the meeting of that body, and while waiting for the meeting to convene the topic of his long incumbency of the office of town clerk was brought up. "Yes," remarked "Uncle Bill," "I've been town clerk for eighteen years - two more years and I'll score." But the Omnipotent God willed otherwise. He called to rest a faithful husband, a true friend, a faithful official. He chilled a heart whose every beat was a beat for his fellowman, a motor to deeds of charity and friendship. He was stricken ill Wednesday, and from the very incipiency of the attack there was little hopes for his recovery. He was a member of R. E. Lee Camp No. 14, U. C. V., and of the K. of H. The remains were interred in the Catholic Cemetery on Sunday evening at 4 o'clock.
