LANDRIAN DIES IN THE SERVICE R. Percy Collins, Jr., Passes Away at the Nevy (sic) Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. Only a few short months ago two of the sons of Mr. and Mrs. R. Percy Collins of near Opelousas enlisted in the navy at the same time. The older, Murto, is doing guard duty at Port Arthur, Texas. The younger, Percy, Jr., was a thrid-class fireman aboard one of Uncle Sam's big fighting boats. Recently he was stricken with influenza and was sent to the naval hospital at the Philadelphia navy yard, wher he died Tuesday night. The remains were shipped from the hospital to this city and were expected to arrive this (Friday) night. Young Collins was only twelve days past his seventeenth year. When he enlisted he had not reached his seven teenth (sic) year and the recruiting officers did not wish to take him, but he insisted on entering the service and on account of his size and weight he was taken in and began his duties enthusiastically. His death was sudden and more than a shock to father, mother, brothers and sisters and other relatives. Dying while in the service of his country, this young man is no less a hero than those brave boys who have died on the fields of France. To the grief stricken father and mother and family The Clarion tenders, its deepest sympathies in the hour of their great sorrow. *Additional Comments*: Robert Percy Collins, Jr. is buried in section 9 of the St. Landry Catholic Church cemetery located in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, LA. www.findagrave.com memorial # 105396042 File at: http://ftp.usgwarchives.org/pub/usgenweb/la/stlandry/obits/c/collins789gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/lafiles/ File size: 1.1 Kb
