Creamer marykcreamer@yahoo.com August 8, 2015, 11:03 pm The St. Landry Clarion (Opelousas, La.) 1890-1921, August 11, 1900, Image 3 Died. - At his plantation home, about six miles from Opelousas, Sunday morning, August 5, 1900, James Richard Cottingham, a native of Alabama, aged sixty years, five months and seven days. When he was only four years of age his parents moved to Caldwell parish, where he received his education in the public schools. He began life as a planter. In this he was engaged in Caldwell parish until 1885, when he removed to St. Landry parish. Mr. Cottingham gave especial attention to the raising of a fine grade of stock. Mr. Cottingham was married four times. His first wife, Molly Neighbors, he married in 1867. She died in 1871, leaving two children, Mrs. Frank Wilson of Birmingham, Ala., and Russell Cottingham, proprietor of the City Hotel at this place. In 1875 deceased married Laura Mafield, who died in 1887, also leaving two children, Martin, now residing in Birmingham, and Miss B. Cottingham. In 1888 Mr. Cottingham married Mrs. Ritzell, a daughter of Rev. N. M. Davis. Deceased married again, to Mrs. Slimmons of Monroe, who survives him. He was laid to rest in the Protestant Cemetery of this place. The Clarion extends its sincere sympathies to the bereaved family. 2nd. Obituary: source: The Opelousas Courier. (Opelousas, La.) 1852-1910, August 11, 1900, Image 1 Mr. James Richard Cottingham died at his residence near Opelousas, Sunday morning, August 5th, 1900, aged 60 years, 5 months and 7 days. Deceased was a native of Alabama, but had been a resident of our parish since 1885. He leaves a wife and several children to whom we tender our sincere condolence.
