Strong of mind, lovable of nature, kind of heart, Mrs. Desmarais was a woman of exceptional attributes. During the long illness of her late husband who preceded her to the grave but a brief seven months, her heroic duties as a wife was sublime. Ever with him, abstaining from any of the diversions that some would seek at times under the circumstances, she was his ministering angel through the several years of confinement to bed. This is of course the duty of a wife - but how often not given! After his death, notwithstanding that he left her a comfortable worldly competence, she set to work to preserve and increase her property, so that her only child, a sweet little girl of six years, may go through life unhampered by need. She fitted up the home place for a private lodging house, and herself secured a position as one of the assistants in the postoffice here. This alone showed a noble trait, a heart that beat true in a true woman. Her death is attended by pathetic circumstances. Her tall stature robust with the flesh and flush of health, none thought that Death hovered her footsteps, until it was announced a little over a week ago that she was afflicted with appendicitis. And then her strong physical constitution it was thought would be with her in the operation, and saved her life. She was taken to New Orleans two weeks ago. The operation was performed in the New Orleans Sanitarium Friday morning, and it was at first thought she would aurvive it. Complications set in Saturday, and Sunday her child, who had remained here, was sent for. Accompanied by her aunt, Miss Althee Desmarais, little Alice left here the same morning, but they arrived there too late, death having taken off the good woman at 1:30 o'clock that day. The body was brought here Monday, and the interment took place at the Catholic cemetery Tuesday at 10 o'clock, after solemnization of the funeral rites in the Catholic Church. The esteem in which she was held in the community was shown by the large concourse of people which met the body at the depot upon its arrival Monday, and again followed it to its last resting place. In her will, which she made just before she departed for New Orleans, she left her only child, a daughter six years of age, under the guardianship of her aunt, Miss Althee Desmarais, who is to raise her to emancipation. She has met her reward up above, but too soon was she called to it. May her soul rest in peace.
