The funeral cortege left the residence at 5 o'clock Tuesday evening for the Catholic Church, where the funeral rites were solemnized; after which the remains were interred in the St. Landry Cemetery. The funeral procession was one of the largest ever witnessed in Opelousas; a deserved mark of esteem. All business places were closed at the hour of the funeral. Mr. Dietlein was a charter member of Hope Hook & Ladder Co. No. 1, and the fireman attended the funeral in uniform. Mr. Dietlein was born in Bavaria, Germany, and immigrated to America in 1846, landing in New York. He pursued his trade of cooper in Pittsburg, Pa., and later worked in breweries in different states. In 1852 he came to Louisiana, locating at Baton Rouge, where he remained some time, having secured employment as cooper; he worked at the same trade in many of the sugar parishes, making hogsheads, sugar barrels, etc. He came to St. Landry in 1858, locating in Washington, where he conducted a meat market for some time, after which he moved to Opelousas and established a small grocery store in the building across the street (north) from his present store. Soon after moving to Opelousas he married Miss Christman, his surviving widow. Naturally, the first years of business in the little corner grocery was up- grade work, with nothing but indomitable will, energy and business sagacity as capital. But steadily the business grew; Dietlein became recognized as a prosperous country merchant; a few years more, and he was considered "gilt- edged;" and later the corner store was abandoned, more pretentious quarters provided, and for many years back he has held the undisputed distinction of being the largest wholesale and retail grocery and liquor dealer in Southwestern Louisiana. For the past ten years his oldest son, Mr. Ant. Dietlein, has managed the business, and he will continue to do so . The business has recently been incorporated under the firm name of the C. Dietlein Co. Limited, and the demise of the senior member will not interfere with the busines.
