When the shroud of death closed around the form of Francis Tillou Nicholis Dupre, last Wednesday evening, the echo of the mourning in the house of death was taken up all over the city. Young, popular, he was liked by everybody. His cheery disposition won a place in the hearts of those with whom he came in contact. His frank nature was an admission card into the confidence of those with whom he had dealings. There can be no stronger attestation of the universal esteem in which he was held than the immense cortege which followed the remains to their last resting place. Perhaps the memory of no young man was ever so honored by the community. He was buried by his comrades of Company F., L. S. N. G., his body attired in his corporal's uniform, his coffin wrapped in the flag of the company. "Taps," the call to rest and sleep, was sounded over his grave at the cemetery. The "reveille" will be sounded up above. The salute of the dead - the farewell to a dear comrade - was fired, and the body of the young citizen-soldier went to the eternal bed, while his soul was standing judgment before the Almighty General up there. Francis Tillou Nicholls Dupre, son of the late Laurent Dupre and Marie C. Garland, died on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1909, at the family residence, in Opelousas, aged 26 years, 9 months and 19 days. The funeral took place Thursday evening at 5 o'clock, interment in the Catholic cemetery. "Nicky," as he was popularly called, had been ill for some months. He had gone to summer resorts for his health, and returned home last month, apparently improved in health. He soon took bed again, however, and a week ago typhoid fever developed. He lingered between life and death for many days, fighting for life, but the end finally came Wednesday. He leaves a mother and several sisters and a brother, the latter Hon. Henry Garland Dupre, Speaker of the House of Representative of this State. He was a grandson of the late capt. H. L. Garland, and a nephew of District Attorney R. Lee Garland.
