CHRISTOPHER . D. ECKART. - At his residence, in Opelousas, on Monday evening, September 30, 1907, at 1:30 o'clock, Christopher D. Eckart, aged 22 years, 10 months and 16 days. Death loves a shining mark. On late Tuesday afternoon one of the largest processions ever seen in Opelousas wended its way slowly towards the Catholic Church. It was a tribute of love and respect to Christopher D. Eckart, whose remains it was accompanying to their last resting place. It was composed of people from all walks of life, the poor, the rich, the lowly as well as those high in social life. It was an attestation of the high opinion entertained by friends and acquaintances of the character of the one who had been removed from their midst. The deceased came from a sturdy stock. His maternal grandfather was the later Christopher Dietlein, a long resident of this city, noted above all for his integrity and honesty in all his dealings. These qualities the subject of this obituary possessed in the highest degree. He came to Opelousas a youth and was employed by the St. Landry State Bank at first as runner. His strict adherence to duty and his faithful performance thereof soon gained him the implicite confidence of the President and Directors, and he rose to the responsible position of Second Assistant Cashier. On the reorganization of the Bank and the resignation of his Uncle, E. M. Boagni, as President, he severed his connections with that institution to take the position of Secretary and book-keeper of Mr. Boagni. And here such satisfaction did he give, that he was about to be entrusted with the sole management of vast interests when called away from this world. Added to his integrity and capacity, there was in the young man at all times such affability and kindness in his manners that no one could have any dealings with him without warming up to him. This was manifested at his funeral. A casual observer could not fail to notice in the large throng that accompanied his remains a number of Italian laborers lately employed by his uncle and who had come in contact with him. As the casket was lowered in the tomb many of them, with their regret at parting forever with their young friend. Christ Eckart was the embodiment of every quality which challenges admiration; and the writer, who knew him well, does not hesitate to state, he was a perfect morally as any young man could be. It is a trite saying, of the dead nothing but the good should be told; but of him nothing else could be said. The ways of Providence are certainly passing strange. He was only twenty-two years, on the threshold of active life, with a bright future before him. Only a few months ago he took to his bosom a partner of his life. He had built himself a lovely residence filled inside with everything necessary to the comforts of the inmates and outside with everything which could minister pleasure to the eye. But ere flowers could reward him with their first buds his body was racked by disease and his spirit took its flight, leaving behind broken hopes, a sorrowful wife and grief-stricken parents, brothers, sisters, and friends. But to assuage their grief they have the memory of a noble character. May He who tempers the wind to the shorn lamb, give them strength to bear with christian resignation their great affliction, and may they draw consolation from the consciousness that their loss has been his gain. A FRIEND.
