Edwards, aged 57 years and 10 months. After lingering for several months wracked with agonizing pain, the life lamp of Daniel S. Edwards burned to it’s socket last Friday morning, and went out. If a laborious, honest life, (not always strewn with the roses of this world,) and patient suffering in latter years, is inscribed by the Great Secretary in the mercy book, the soul of Dan Edwards, good citizen, kind and loving husband and father and loyal friend, reposes by the side of the Eternal King. Born on Bayou Boeuf, St. Landry parish, nearly fifty-eight years ago, deceased had always been a resident of St. Landry parish. In early life he was with his parents on their plantation on Bayou Boeuf, and received a good education, which enabled him to choose the profession of Civil Engineer. Becoming fascinated with railroading, however, he accepted positions as section foreman at Garland, then at Opelousas, and later at Washington. In 1896, he accepted a position as deputy tax-collector of parish taxes, and it was then he moved to Opelousas. Upon the death of Sheriff Deshotels he was left without employment, and resumed his profession of civil engineer and surveyor, at which he worked until he was appointed postmaster at Opelousas in 1905. A cancer on his nose which had given him pain and anxiety for many years assumed a malignant form soon after he had taken his duties as postmaster, and after going to New Orleans for treatment several times he found that it was necessary for him to resign in order to receive the medical attention which his physicians told him was required, and which necessitated a stay in New Orleans of several months. The best doctors vainly tried to stop the progress of the cancer, until, a few months ago, he came home a disfigured, suffering mortal, to die with his loved ones. It was known there was no hope for life beyond a few short days. He knew it. His loving and devoted wife and doting children knew it. His wide circle of friends knew it. But there was no way of staying the hand of death, and all waited around the deathbed listening for the final summon. During the last few days of his illness his suffering was alleviated by the use of opiates, and when the end came, it found an unconscious, amaciated form to receive it. Mr. Edwards was married twice. By his first wife, Octavia Wynn, there are two children living-Henry Edwards, of Alexandria, and Mrs. Mair, of St. Louis, Mo. By his second wife, Clara Voorhies, who survives him, there are six living children-George T, Miss Daisy, Mrs. (Dr.) R. B. Chachere, Bert, Roy and Clifford. The remains were interred in the Protestant cemetery Saturday morning at 11 o'clock, with Masonic rites, and the high esteem in which deceased was held was evidenced by the large funeral procession which formed the cortege. The grief-stricken wife and children have the heartfelt sympathy of the Clarion in their hour of great distress.
