March 13, 1897, page 3 Obituary. DIED - At the residence of his step-son, Chas. Lafleur, in Whiteville, La., on Friday, March 5th, 1897, Hypolite Fontenot, aged 78 years, 7 months and 5 days. Mr. Fontenot was born in this parish in 1819. He was one of the oldest residents of this immediate vicinity, and a member of the Holy Catholic church, and remained as true to his faith as he did to his country. Whenever his honest hand was grasped, one was made to feel a heart was close in his body. His remains were followed to the Dubuisson cemetery by a large concourse of friends, where an earnest and feeling sermon was delivered by Rev. Father D'Homme, after which all that was mortal of him was consigned to the cold earth. Thus has passed away one of the staunchest citizens and truest friends it has ever been the writer's good fortune to know. Farewell friend, we will miss you, but we shall ever hold in pleasant memory the kindly and noble example of a well spent life. To his bereaved and heart stricken relatives our whole heart goes out in sympathy, and may the Supreme Ruler give them the courage to bear up under this heavy affliction. "Peaceful be thy silent slumber, Peaceful in thy grave so low, Thou no more will join our number, Thy no more our song will know; Yet again we hope to meet thee When the day of life is fled, And in heaven with joy to greet thee Where no farewell tears are shed."
