Rice Garland, associate Justice of the Supreme Court, and mother of Henry L. Garland Esq., died at the residence of her son, on last Monday, and was buried on Tuesday evening at 3 o'clock P. M. Mrs. Garland reached the venerable age of 79 years, and belonged to one of the oldest families of St. Landry, - the Lastrapes. During her long life she was noted for her piety, charity, and great hospitality, and she raised up a number of orphan children who loved her as an own mother. Although she had been sick for a long time, and advanced in years, yet it grieved her family sorely to give her up. An immense concourse of friends and acquaintances followed her remains to the grave, and in her death Opelousas and St. Landry parish lose a most estimable christian lady, and one of the old land-marks which joined the present era to a generation past and gone. May she rest in peace.
