Mrs. Clara Thompson, aged 83 years and nine months, died at her home in Baton Rouge on last Monday night at nine o'clock and was buried in this city after the arrival of the two o'clock Frisco train on Tuesday afternoon. Scores of friends of Superintendent of Public Schools C. J. Thompson, accompanied the body of Mrs. Thompson, to its last resting place in the Protestant cemetery. Mrs. Thompson had quite an eventful life. A short time after she was married to her first husband, Richard Glaze, a resident of Bayou Boeuf, this parish, the war broke out. A Yankee soldier was killed by a man, whose name was pronounced similar to Glaze, and the young lady's husband was accused, brought before the Yankees, court martialed and shot to death, while crying out his innocence and dying like a true Southerner. After this occurred she fled to Texas, with her only daughter and child, who afterward became the first wife of C. J. Thompson. Mrs. Thompson was a native Georgia but came to Louisiana at an early age. While she and her first husband resided on Bayou Boeuf they were considered wealthy being the owners of several thousands of acres of the best lands in that portion of the parish. Additional Comments: NOTE: This Obituary reads that it is for Clara Thompson but it is in fact a obituary for Sarah F. Tucker who married Richard Henry Glaze 12 Feb. 1855 (Opel. Ct. Hse: Mar. #1279). Their daughter Mary E. Glaze married Charles Jackson Thompson. On the 1880 US Federal Census it lists Sara Thompson in the household of Charles & Mary. She is listed a "Mother" to relationship to head of household. But it should read Mother-in-law. On the 1900 * 1910 US Federal Census she is listed as Sarah Thompson and on her death certificate she is listed as Sarah F. Thompson. She is buried at the Myrtle Grove Cemetery located in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, LA. www.findagrave.com memorial # 149763480 File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/stlandry/obits/g/glaze6055gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/lafiles/ File size: 2.6 Kb
