(Opelousas, La.) 1917 - 1921, April 03, 1920, Image 4 PROMINENT CITIZEN HAS PASSED AWAY When Leopold Goudchaux Crossed the Great Divide, an Old Landmark Went to His Reward Leopold Goudchaux, one of the oldest and most prominent citizens of St. Landry parish, departed this life at Bunkie on last Wednesday, March 24. He was stricken while at the railroad station waiting the arrival of the Texas & Pacific train to go to his home at Big Cane, expiring a few moments later, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. David Davis. He was returning from the wedding of his youngest daughter, who was married Monday in Alexandria, and had stopped at Bunkie to visit his daughter. He apparently was in good health and excellent spirits and the attack coming on him suddenly was a great shock to his family and host of friends. Mr. Goudchaux leaves, besides his wife, thirteen children to mourn his departure. Six daughters and seven sons survive him. The daughters are Mrs. Rosa Goudchaux Barnett, Mrs. Bonnie Goudchaux Levy, Mrs. Hortenses Goudchaux Weil, Mrs. Sarah Goudchaux Meyer, Mrs. Della Goudchaux Davis and Mrs. Elise Goudchaux Goldsmith. The sons are Jake, Charley, Abe, L. E., Julius, Henry and Sylvan. Mr. Goudchaux was born in Alsace, France, emigrating to this country when a mere boy. His first occupation was that of peddler and by dint of hard work and saving he accumulated sufficient funds to enter the mercantile business at Big Cane, where he has lived for many years. In business he was very successful and amassed a large fortune. He is one of the largest landowners in the state, besides large interests in livestock and other ventures. Mr. Goudchaux was admired and respected by all who knew him and his acquaintance extended over several parishes. In Opelousas he was well known, having been a frequent visitor to this city for many years. The body was brought to Opelousas on the Southern Pacific train last Friday morning from Bunkie and was interred in the Jewish cemetery. The members of Orphan Friends Lodge No. 185, F. & A. M., of Big Cane, assisted by the members of Humble Cottage Lodge No. 19 of this city, met the body at the station and marched with it to the cemetery where the impressive funeral rites of the order were held. Mr. Goudchaux had been a member for many years. Services were also conducted at the grave by Rabbi Weiss of Alexandria, according to the Jewish rites. The pall bearers at the funeral were Jake, Charley, Abe, Julius, Henry and Sylvan Goudchaux, sons of the deceased, and Dr. J. A. Haas, Max Klaus, A. A. Anding, M. Winsberg and A. J. Richard. Honorary pall bearers, Jonas W. Bailey, Sr., Leon Wolff and B. F. Vannoy. St. Landry parish loses a useful citizen and the Big Cane section especially will miss him and find him hard to replace. The Star-Progress extends condolences to the bereaved family. LEOPOLD GOUDCHAUX I stepped out of my office a moment ago and I observed that Leopold Goudchaux had "gone to the undiscovered country." He died full of honors and of years. The writer has known him intimately forty-four years. He was always a devoted husband and father, a staunch friend. He was twice married. He reared a large family of good men, splendid women. His life work was the care of his children. Leopold Goudchaux was an honest man. He had his business reverses, but he never repudiated an honest obligation. He paid one hundred cents on the dollar he owed. Good bye, old friend. You lived your life worthily and in the realms beyond, you have naught to fear. The world is better for your life. The world is poorer for your death. AN OLD FRIEND. Opelousas, La., March 25.
