Creamer marykcreamer@yahoo.com August 27, 2015, 7:47 pm The Opelousas Courier (Opelousas, La.) 1852-1910, June 03, 1905, Image 1 "God's Finger Touched Her and She Slept." Mrs. Melanie Guidry departed this life May 21, 1905, aged 64 years, 4 months, and 22 days. At twenty minutes past ten - as man counts time - just as the Sabbath day was closing by God's count, her soul went to meet its Maker. "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, but unto those who love Him He doeth all things well." He sends forth His Reaper day by day to gather the sheaves from harvest fields of humanity, and claims very many loved ones among us. On Sunday, May 21, 1905, His harvesting angel entered the home of Dr. Z. T. Young, of Ville Platte, and, with relentless scythe, severed a link in the chain of love that bound together very closely a happy family, and taking by the hand a beloved sister, led her safely across the swift current of death into her Father's home above, and delivered her soul to the keeping of Him who had given it. There it abides, in the glorious presence of an omnipotent God, who, beckoning to it, says: "Come forward, my good and faithful soul; thou hast been faithful over the things of the earth, therefore inherit the crown of everlasting life" - a fitting sequel to every true and noble life. Mrs. Melanie Guidry, the eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen M. Young, was born near Prud'homme City, La., December 29, 1840. A number of years thereafter the family moved to Plaquemine Ridge, La., where she attended the schools of the neighborhood. About the age of 15 she entered the Convent of the Immaculate Conception at Opelousas, and remained there several years. In 1861 she became the bride of Mr. T. P. Guidry. For 24 years previous to her death she made her home at the residence of her brother, Dr. Z. T. Young, of Ville Platte. Early in life she united with the Roman Catholic Church, and lived and died in that faith. She was beautiful in character, generous and sweet in disposition, ever ready to sacrifice herself for the benefit of humanity. To those who knew her intimately her memory will always remain a monument to unselfish devotion and self-sacrifice. In her demise we have lost a friend in need and indeed, a loving sisiter, a devoted foster-mother, and, in fact, one of the truest types of God's most perfect handiwork - woman. We loved her dearly, and we miss her dreadfully, but we should not weep for her any more, since we know that she is separated from us only for a while and cannot come back to us, but we can go to her, for, when she left us, she joined the beloved ones who had gone before, and with them peacefully rests under the tender care of our blessed Lord and Savior. Death is but a transition from a world of sorrow, trials and tribulations to a world of everlasting splendor and magnificence, where "the wicked cease from troubling and the weary are at rest." Life here below is merely the beginning of an existence which culminates in the complete realization of the Christian's fondest hope - life eternal in God's House of many mansions. Lord, the Giver of every good and perfect gift, we pray thee to guide and strengthen the family and friends of the deceased in this their hour of dire bereavement; comfort their aching hearts that they may bow in humble submission, and, with Christian fortitude, say: "Thy will, O God, not ours, be done." Only a quiver and sigh; Only a pause in the breath; And our loved one had passed from this valley of tears Into the valley of Death. Only a folding of hands Over the suffering breast, And her spirit was borne from this wearisome world To the beautiful mansion of rest. Only a drooping of lids Over weary and pain-stricken eyes That closed here below but to open above In a rapture of joyful surprise. Only a short little sleep; A night of sweet peace and repose, Ere the dawn of Eternity's glorious morn, And a day that knows never a close. Only to part for a while; Only a going before, To that home on the banks of the River of Peace - That land with the 'beautiful shore." A DEVOTED NEPHEW.
