Few deaths have caused such a wave of depresssion and sorrow in a community as that of E. C. Hayes, which occurred in El Paso, Texas, February 9, 1900. Everything that travel and skill could procure for his recovery was tried, but death cane as a merciful relief, after long suffering. His remains were brought to the home of his child-hood, where, at the Opelousas cemetery, were rendered, mournfully and tenderly, the last sade duties. He was possessed of a genial, steadfast and whole-hearted nature that pervaded all in his presence, and every one who knew him hold a pleasant memory of his life spent here. During his last illness he was surrounded by all dearest to him on earth - a loving wife, faithful brother and devoted parents. Great sympathy is expressed for the bereaved members of the family; especially for the helpless anguish of his aged parents, whose misfortunes are indeed severe, having survived all but one of six sons. May they gather strength from the Mercy of Heaven and their mutual sorrows to bear them up in this trial. "The heart at rest, In the quiet breast And the soul at peace with God."
