Creamer marykcreamer@yahoo.com September 12, 2015, 3:31 pm The Opelousas Courier (Opelousas, La.) 1852-1910, September 10, 1864, Image 1 DIED. - At his residence in Plaquemine Brulee, Thursday, Sept. 1st, 1864, at 11 P. M., in consequence of a wound, received while defending his property against Jayhawkers, BOZMAN HAYES, Esq., aged 63 years. Deceased had been robbed two or three times before, but had resolved to submit no more. On the night od the 1st inst., seven men came to his house, and with most abusive language threatened fearful effects of their power if ceratin property was not delivered to them. Mr. Hayes having obtained his gun, fired upon and killed the only one then visible; but was in turn fired upon by one who was hidden. He lived only an hour after being shot. To his numerous friends nothing need be said of him as a citizen. He was well known and highly respected. He was a consistent member of the M. E. Church; and in all the relations of life singularly honest and upright. He was a generous friend to the poor; and the soldier found his house a home. Perfectly conscious of approaching death, he faltered not as he entered the dark valley. His faith was strong, and his hopes were bright. His family and friends have lost one whose place will ne'er be filled; but they joyfully anticipate the glad time when they shall meet him again. His Pastor. F. S. Rawson.
