The place that knew them once so well, will know them now no more forever. It becomes our duty, from many considerations, to pay the last humble tribute of respect, due to LEWIS HAYES, of St. Landry, who, in the bloom of life, was snatched away by the cold hand of death, and laid beneath the silent clay. He died at Vicksburg, Miss., on the 16th of August 1862, of typhoid fever, aged 20 years. Being aroused by the repeated calls of his bleeding country, this young man resolved at once to shed his life's best blood, if needs be, in the cause of liberty. He accordingly took leave of his loved mother, and all held near and dear to him, and turned away to be a soldier; to linger only where the standard of his country waved. But ere he was aware of it, disease was upon him which, in a few short days, ended his earthly pilgrimage. He was a good boy; we regret his loss: but it seemed that God had made it the proper time to renew his heart and take him home to heaven. A fews days previous to his death, he felt his pardon sure, and expressed a perfect willingness to die; all he regretted was leaving behind his fond mother. Sais he "I have found out that this world is all nothing;" thus realizing that there is nothing true but heaven. Such a victory is worth all the victories ever achieved on the field of battle. Farewell, young soldier, thou hast fought thy last battle, and hast won a crown that shall shine as the brightness of heaven, and that shall be as lasting as eternity itself. May the bereaved ones bow in submission to the will of Almighty God, and remember that if faithful, they shall ere long join those who have gone before and all be happy in the "better land." S.
