(Opelousas, La.) 1917-1921, April 17, 1920, Image 10 "A FRIENDLY SMILE" (Dedicated to Mr. Henry Joubert) Died, at his home in Joubert Cove, at 4:15 a. m., Friday, April 9, 1920, at the age of 71 years, 11 months and 15 days. The deceased was a prominent and honored members of the Joubert family, and was allied by blood and affinity to nearly all the old and respected Creole families of this parish, and on his own account is entitled to more than a passing notice commemorative of his good qualities in all the relations of life. The Joubert family, on the paternal side, sprang from the sound French stock and grafted on some of the best Creole stock of Southwest Louisiana. His mother was a Miss Stagg of Grand Prairie, and the family here in St. Landry have most worthily borne the good name which it has always held by right of conduct as well as by inheritance. The record made by its members in public as well as in private life is irreproachable and a worthy example to the young men of our country. Chief among their distinguished traits is a high sense of the obligations of citizenship and a firm adherence to political convictions - qualities which governed them not only in the dark period of the civil war, but ever since, throughout the ordeal which our commonwealth has been compelled to pass. Immediately upon the outburst of the civil war, the deceased entered the Confederate army in the home guard, he being too young to enter the regular army. Being released at the termination of hostilities, he returned home and began at once the active and successful business pursuit which he followed until ill health incapacitated him for work. By industry, strict integrity and good judgment he succeeded in rearing and educating a large family and leaving to his widow and family a comfortable subsistance. He was not a politician in the ordinary sense, but he always took a deep interest and an active part in the politics of his country, especially on a reform ticket. The deceased was one of a family of thirteen children, eight of whom still survive, the deceased being the fifth death amongst them for fourteen years past. The father of the family, Evariste Joubert, a noble type of citizen and a planter of spotless character, died of heart disease, at his home at Joubert Cove, in 1893. The deceased was looked upon in some sort as the head of the family, and in his own household he was not only the center of patriarchial influence and control but he possessed the unbounded respect and tender devotion of each and every member of that grief-stricken household. His sons, his daughters and devoted wife for weeks and months tenderly ministered to his sufferings, supplying their intiring devotions and tender nursing and everything that heart could wish, to soothe the dying pillow of husband, father and friend. As he had lived, so he died - without fear and without reproach. He was buried in the Opelousas Catholic church, on Saturday, April 10, and a large concourse of relatives and friends and acquaintances from Washington, Grand Prairie, Andrepont, Opelousas and Lawtell testifying by their presence of sympathy for the grief-stricken family and esteem of good citizen, friend, neighbor, husband and father that was laid away in his last resting place. "Then conquer we must, For our cause is just; And this is our motto: "In God we trust.' And the Star Spangled Banner In triumph shall wave, Over the land of the free And home of the brave." - J. V. Gaudin Additional Comments: NOTE: Henry Joubert is buried of the Saint Landry Catholic Church cemetery located in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. www.findagrave.com memorial # 144926336 File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/stlandry/obits/j/joubert5696gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/lafiles/ File size: 4.3 Kb
