Died at his residence in Opelousas, Wednesday, June 29, 1904, Austin Lacombe, aged 61 years. Deceased was a gallant Confederate soldier who enlisted in the first company that left St. Landry in 1861, and served with conspicuous bravery throughout the war as a member of Co. C, 6th La. Regt., army of Northern Virginia. He participated in most of the bloody battles of the war in Virginia between 1861 and 1865, and remained with the famous "Louisiana Tiger" Brigade until the surrender at Appomatox. After the war he founded the famous Lacombe Hotel, which has a reputation extending throughout many States as one of the best hostleries in the Union. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his loss, and to whom the Courier extends its heartfelt condolence. His remains were laid to rest Thursday morning at 11 o'clock in the Catholic cemetery of Opelousas, and were attended by Hope Hook and Ladder Co., No. 1, in full uniform, on whose truck the corpse was conveyed to the cemetery followed by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. Thus has passed away another of Louisiana's "Old Guard" who, on the many sanguinary battlefields of Virginia, from 1861 to 1865, immortalized their State and shed undying lustre on Southern valor, now the proud heritage of all Americans. May the grass grow green on his honored grave, and may the last reveille find him in the full enjoyment of the beatitude of the blest.
