(Opelousas, La.) 1868-1878, February 20, 1869, Image 2 DIED. - At midnight, Monday, January 25th, 1869, J. M. Lewis, son of Ellen C. and the late Judge Wm. B. Lewis, aged 26 years. The deceased contracted the illness which finally proved fatal while a prisoner of war for nearly a year in Fortre-s Monroe. Fore about nine months past he was confined more or less to his room, and endured with calm and heroic resignation the wasting disease which slowly but surely undermined his strong constitution. Several weeks before his death, he evinced that perfect willingness to die, and that quiet confidence in God's mercy, and calm submission to His providence which are based alone on a consciousness of forgiven sins. Poor Murph! "After life's fitful fever he sleeps well." May that God who smoothed his dying pillow, and who ushered his spirit into the realms of eternal peace as gently as the tenderly shepherd carries a lamb in his bosom, soothe the sorrowing hearts of his relatives and friends with the assurance that their loss is his gain, and that released from all suffering, he beckons them to follow him into the better land.
