He was educated in the public schools of his parish and spent the earlier years of his youth and young manhood in Washington and Opelousas, conducting a drug- store in the latter city for many years. "In 1888 Mr. Mayo came to Lake Charles and accepted a position as deputy under his brother, Thaddeus Mayo, who was at the time district clerk for this district. He remained in the clerk's office until 1890, when he was appointed deputy United States collector of internal revenues, which position he held until 1893, when he was appointed United States commissioner, holding the latter important office until his death. "His wife died several years ago, and his son, Hon. A. M. Mayo, of this city, with his brother, Thad. Mayo, of this city, and W. H. Mayo of St. Louis, survive him. "Mr. Mayo was a prominent Mason and a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen, holding several important offices in the Masonic fraternity at the time of his death. "He was Principal Sojourner of Lake Charles No. 47, Royal Arch Masons, Deputy Illustrious Master of Calcasieu Council No. 19, R. & S. M. and Captain General of Malta Commandery, U. D.
