He was 84 and a native of Opelousas. Visiting was at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday. Visiting at the funeral home, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, with wake services at 8 p.m., conducted by Knights of Columbus Council No. 3298, Catholic Daughters of the Americas No. 1608, Court of St. Charles and Ushers Society of St Louis King of France. Visiting at the funeral home, 8 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. Monday. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Louis King of France Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Monday, celebrated by the Rev. Maynard Hurst. Entombment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory Mausoleum. Survived by wife of 61 years, Torida Piccione Messina, Baton Rouge; a daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Meredith Whiteman, Baton Rouge; two sons and daughters-in-law, Salvador "Sam" and Marlene Messina, Baton Rouge, and Joseph "Joe" and Sandra Messina, Denham prings; two sisters, Pearl Cascio, Beaumont, Texas, and Johanna "Jennie" Gennuso, Opelousas; a brother, Charles "Charley" Messina, Beaumont; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents, Salvatore and Francesca Messina; two brothers, Anthony "Tony" and Gerlando "Joe" Messina; and two sisters, Lena Ricotta and Mary Dugas. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Darron, Todd, Kevin, Joey and Mike Messina, Brian Whiteman and Joel Nickel. He was a member of St. Louis King of France Catholic Church and Ushers Society. Memorial donations may be made to St. Louis King of France Catholic Church.
