June 03, 1893, page 2 OBITUARY. Died, at his home in Faquetaique in this parish, on Wednesday, May 24th, at 4:30 o'clock a. m., Dr. Henry O. Read, aged 60 years, 2 months and 13 days. Dr. Read was a native of the State of Louisiana, having been born in St. Landry parish March 11, 1833. He obtained his medical education in the year 1854, in the State medical college at New Orleans, now Tulane University, and practiced his profession continuously until about two years since, when he was compelled on account of ill health to desist from practice. He married in Abbeville, Marie Eugenie Guegnon, a half-sister to the late Judge A. Bailey, a lady of highly cultivated mind and estimable qualities, and who survives him. There are four sons of this marriage, one of whom, Stephen Read, the youngest, is a resident of our town, and the efficient office deputy of the Sheriff. Dr. Read resided at Abbeville, parish of Vermillion, for many years, practicing his profession in copartnership with Dr. W. D. White. He was highly esteemed in that community, having been elected as mayor of the town. During the war he served the Confederacy in the army as a surgeon. He was an accomplished and fluent writer, and for many years was a special contributor to the New Orleans Medical and Surgical Journal. Dr. Read was a staunch Democrat, and never failed to cast his vote and use his influence in behalf of his party. Though always weak and sickly, yet of energetic habits, and his life by reason of abstemiousness and care was prolonged beyond that of many a stouter frame. In character and disposition he was gentle and engaging, charitable and pious. Though a learned man, he was guileless as a child, in speech and thought. As he lived, so he died, without fear, without reproach, and at peace with God and all his fellow me. Abbeville, Lake Charles and Lafayette papers please copy.
