Walton A. Sandoz, an aged and respected citizen of this city and a native of this place, expired at his home on Market street, on Wednesday morning at 10:30 at the age of sixty-six years. Mr. Sandoz was one of the best known residents of Opelousas, being a druggist for over a quarter of a century. He was a member of one of the most influential families and was loved and respected by all citizens. His death came as a terrible shock to the entire community, as it was not generally known that he was in any way seriously ill. On Tuesday morning Mr. Sandoz arose apparently feeling in a fine condition and went to his place of business. That night, after retiring he complained of being cold and not feeling well, at the same time telling his wife that he thought he was choking. Mrs. Sandoz immediately went about the house arranging hot water bags, and was greatly surprised upon returning to the room to find her husband unconscious. Neighbors and the family physician were called in, and everything to restore the aged gentleman to his senses proved futile. He began sinking rapidly and died the following morning. Mr. Sandoz reared a large family and is survived by his wife and 13 children. He was married twice, his first wife being Marie Sandoz, while his second was Miss Lucy Judge, of Napoleonville. The children from his first wife are: Lieutenant Fritz Sandoz, U. S. N., Norfolk, Va, Morgan, Claude, Elbert, and Lebvre, N. O., Mrs. J. N. Daniels of Star Hill, Mrs. L. S. Hyner of Angola and Miss Amie and Rosa. Four children from his second wife survive him, O'Rielly, Joel, Anne and Emily. Funeral ceremonies were held at the Catholic Church, interment being made in the Catholic cemetery, where a large number of people from all over the parish assembled to pay their last tribute to one of the most noble citizens of Opelousas. Mr. Sandoz was a member of the Opelousas Hope Hook & Ladder Company, R. Lee Camp No. 14 U. C. V., of the World and the Knights of Honor. The fireman company turned out in full number, as did the Woodmen; the body was carried on the long fire truck. Rev. Father M. A. Grace, president of St. Charles College, Grand Coteau preached a beautiful eulogy on the life of Mr. Sandoz, calling attention to the several hundred people present to the noble life lead by this departed citizen.
