Creamer marykcreamer@yahoo.com August 1, 2015, 10:23 am The Opelousas Courier (Opelousas, La.) 1852-1910, January 12, 1878, Image 1 At 5:20 A. M. on January 4th, 1878, the spirit of JOEL H. SANDOZ, Esq., bade adieu to earth and passed to its maker. It requires no fulsome praise to call attention to his death - nor strained panegyrie to perpetuate the memory of our departed friend. Louisana has lost one of her truest and most faithful sons; St. Landry Parish one of her most substantial and worthy citizens; and mankind, a brother, whose heart and generous nature ever throbbed with warmest charity to his fellow men. Aye - he will be missed! We do not yet realize our loss; but soon his absence will be marked, and the "vacant chair" in the sanctum of the OPELOUSAS COURIER, the committee rooms, social club, and friendly group, will eloquently and sadly proclaim the loss to his country of patriot, citizen, and friend. He was born in the city of Neuchatel, Switzerland, on the 13th of December, 1817, where he grew to boyhood in the joyous freedom of a republican home and goverment. When he left with his father and family his native land he only sought the larger boundaries of republican institutions in America, became an adopted child of Louisiana, and remained her faithful son, through every vicissitude of her fortunes until the day of his death. He founded the OPELOUSAS COURIER in December, 1852, and conducted it as an uncompromising democratic journal, throughout every campain, down to December 1870, when he transfered the control of the paper to his sons, who now edit and publish it upon the same basis. During his long career as a journalist and publisher, he was always consistent and unwavering in his political faith. The liberty and just rights of Louisiana and her people, were the paramount objects of his labor - and personal interests were ever made subordinate to the general good of the country. His friends are proud of his political record - and his opponents dare not attack the integrity of his principles. He is dead, but his deeds of truth, sincerity, and fidelity will be as imperishable as the principles he advocated. An honorable and worthy citizen is no more - but his labors and sacrifices for the people, will remain a lasting monument to his meritorious worth. A friend has left us, but we retain the pleasant legacy of his generous nature, social qualities, and genuine friendship. The people - relations - friends - companious will lament him; nay - his magnanimous enemies will deplore his loss to our parish. May the sod rest lightly on his remains.
