Thomas Hardeman Lewis Expire on Same Day -- Both Prominent in St. Landry. Jacques Benoit Sandoz, aged 57 years, and Col. Thomas Hardeman Lewis, aged 77 years, are both dead. The two men were among the most prominent citizens of St. Landry parish. Mr. Sandoz expired at his residence in this city early Thursday morning from paralysis. He was stricken by a severe attack of paralysis over two years, immediately after attending church, on a Sunday, and from that day on until Friday morning he was deprived of the power of speech and could not walk. His death was awaited at any moment. The life of Mr. Sandoz is like an open book; from a poor boy he worked his way up into this world, and at the time of his death was the owner of the largest hardware firm in Southwest Louisiana, the heaviest taxpayer in Opelousas and one of the wealthiest men of St. Landry. A member of one of the largest and most prominent Creole families in this section of the State he will be missed by the entire community. Mr. Sandoz was buried in the Catholic cemetery in this city and his funeral was attended by several hundred people of Opelousas and surronding (sic) country. Father John Engberink performed the ceremony and gave a very interesting talk on the manner in which Mr. Sandoz had lived as a man. He eugolized (sic) him as a model man and stated that Opelousas had sustained a severe blow in the death of such a venerable citizen.
