Creamer marykcreamer@yahoo.com August 2, 2015, 9:10 pm The Opelousas Courier (Opelousas, La.) 1852-1910, April 2, 1859, Image 2 Departed this life, on the 19th March last, in her twentieth year, at the residence of her husband, J. B. Schmit of Washington, after a long and painful illness, Mistress MARTHA DELIA SCHMIT, daughter of Stephen W. Quirk. Mrs. Schmit had been married very little over a year, and by her death, she has indeed left a sad vacancy in her family, and among her friends. Young, lovely, accomplished, entwined by the affections of a devoted husband, and idolized by her parents, her path appeared to be strown with flowers. But that fell destroyer, Consumption, had marked her for his own. With his icy fingers, he nipped the bud of life, and withering she died, still beautiful in death. With a smile she expressed her resignation to her fate, and her only regret was having to part with her husband and parents so soon. Such was her death scene. Her burial was on a dark and rainy day. Earth herself appeared to shed tears over her grave, and to envy Heaven the acquisition of an Angel more.--May we all, like her, "So live, that sinking in our last long sleep," "We then may smile, when all around us weep." A FRIEND.
